This\u00a0new project works to enhance public understanding of the fiscal, social and moral costs of our unprecedented imprisonment boom. A joint effort\u00a0of the Center for Human Rights and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsj.washington.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Law, Societies, and Justice Program<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Rethinking Punishment<\/em>, will integrate teaching, research and advocacy to enable students and faculty to collaborate on projects to stimulate new thinking about punishment policy in Washington State and the United States as a whole.\u00a0 Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/people\/katherine-beckett-ph-d\/\">Katherine Beckett<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lsj.washington.edu\/people\/steve-herbert\">Steve Herbert <\/a>(pictured below) are leading this interdisciplinary initiative.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/katherine-beckett-headshot-e1482281541469.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3345 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/katherine-beckett-headshot-e1482281541469-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Katherine Beckett, UWCHR Steering Committee\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/Herbert_S_44.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3323 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/Herbert_S_44-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Herbert\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/Herbert_S_44-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/Herbert_S_44-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/02\/Herbert_S_44-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>One aspect of this initiative includes \u201cStories of Hope and Redemption,\u201d in which the life stories of people who served, or are serving, long prison sentences will be captured and shared. These stories will provide an opportunity for viewers and listeners to learn that people, even those\u00a0who committed serious crimes, can transform themselves and forge productive and meaningful lives once released. Shedding light on the process of transformation will help counter the popular perception that those convicted of crimes\u2014and especially crimes of violence\u2014are irredeemable. In a collaboration with the University of British Columbia, the first radio story of hope and redemption &#8220;Superpredators Revisited,&#8221;\u00a0is now available via <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/terryproject\/cited-1-superpredators-revisited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cited podcast<\/a>.\u00a0 Read a UW Today article about the radio documentary stories <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/blog\/documentary-explores-a-juvenile-crime-a-life-transformed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0A special thanks to our participants and to <a href=\"http:\/\/citedpodcast.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert \u201cSam\u201d Fenn and Gordon Katic<\/a> for their hard work on these stories.
