{"id":6976,"date":"2022-08-09T15:36:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T22:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/?page_id=6976"},"modified":"2024-02-06T11:02:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T19:02:07","slug":"mpop","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/humanrights\/projects\/mpop\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategies for Massage Parlor Workers&#8217; Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project, led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpopsea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Massage Parlor Outreach Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (MPOP) in collaboration with the UWCHR, and supported by a partnership with nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/saveourplanet.org\/\">Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs<\/a> (SEE), deepens community-based research on how state laws and other regulations impact the living and working conditions of Asian migrant workers in the greater Seattle area. MPOP is a grassroots collective that conducts outreach and political education with Asian migrant massage and sex workers in the Chinatown\/International District and the greater Seattle area. They involve workers in research design and implementation and report findings back to the workers and the broader communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>OBJECTIVES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By engaging in community-led research, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we hope to answer the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are the institutions (state, municipal, county level) that impact the lives of massage parlor workers in the region?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are the state laws being referenced in criminalization?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are the municipal codes\/laws in each city that are being used in criminalization?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How does this compare with other massage industries across race and gender groups?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are other organizing efforts by workers engaged in informal, gendered labor across industries (domestic workers, street vendors etc.)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How has language within media coverage, legislation, licensing requirements, and other areas shaped narratives around Asian massage workers?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We believe that in answering these questions, we can hone in on strategies that can not only change the systemic conditions of Asian massage workers in the greater Seattle area, but contribute to the rights of massage parlor workers and sex workers both nationally and on a global scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Community-based research: <\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project is structured in a way to support the engagement of massage parlor workers themselves in research design, implementation, and sharing of findings.
