{"id":9117,"date":"2017-03-10T21:06:42","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T21:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/global\/?p=9117"},"modified":"2017-03-10T21:15:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T21:15:52","slug":"millennials-meet-environmental-change-via-digital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/global\/news\/millennials-meet-environmental-change-via-digital\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennials meet environmental change via digital story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"date\">POSTED BY: <a title=\"Visit Oded Oron\u2019s website\" href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/people\/oded-oron\/\" rel=\"author external\">ODED ORON<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_0060-e1488857028339.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A group of Jackson School undergraduate students together with Washington state\u2019s Tulalip Tribes launched\u00a0a new interactive digital story \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sway.com\/wluV0qRyoGiK3J80\">Finding Common Ground in a World of Environmental Change<\/a>\u201d to\u00a0over 50 UW students, faculty and local communities who gathered Monday evening at UW\u2019s Intellectual House to learn more about environmental issues affecting the Tulalip Tribes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14998\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<div id=\"attachment_14998\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14998 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_0059-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Task Force student Tiffany Swaw (at podium) outlines the strategic communications plan, which includes in part an Instagram account, digital storytelling and public events around four key messages the students developed in partnership with the Tulalip Tribes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>The event featured remarks by students, faculty and Tulalip members as well as a screening of <a href=\"https:\/\/sway.com\/wluV0qRyoGiK3J80\">a digital story<\/a> designed to communicate to non-tribal millennials Puget Sound restoration efforts and treaty rights.<\/p>\n<p>The digital story, a collaborative effort between 15 International Studies majors and Tulalip Tribes Public Affairs, is only one component of a strategic communications plan the students developed as part of their Jackson School\u2019s capstone course\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/news\/category\/taskforce\/\">Task Force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14999\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<div id=\"attachment_14999\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14999 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_0060-e1488857028339-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">An interactive, digital story about the environmental change in Washington state, impacting the livelihood of the Tulip Tribes, was screened in public for the first time at UW Intellectual House on Monday, March 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Nathan Aberg, who introduced the digital story presentation, spoke about using digital as \u201cthe glue\u201d in reaching the millennial generation, and how the story incorporates the growing passion they felt for indigenous rights, with an ultimate goal to breed action among millenials for environmental protection and treaty rights.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the Tulalip Tribes, including Francesca Hillery, Public Affairs Manager, shared the impact of environmental\u00a0changes on their livelihoods and important research and partnership with the students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/news\/category\/taskforce\/\">Task Force<\/a> consist of small groups of Jackson School undergraduates\u00a0who investigate a real-world policy issue and produce a final report and practical policy recommendations, to be presented in front of an external evaluator.
