This festival of contemporary Brazilian films gives marginalized voices the mic in discussions of race, sexuality, and governance. The 2020 fest runs\u00a0Nov.\u00a020\u201329, with short films about the ebbs and flows of life, identity, and belonging and fierce features on topics from student civic engagement to unearthing family legacies to the ties that bind (and break) community.<\/p>\n
Curated by scholar of Brazilian\u00a0cinema\u00a0Emanuella Leite and with support from Professor and Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies Jonathan Warren, Travessias Brazilian Film Festival takes place via Northwest Film Forum\u2019s virtual\u00a0cinema.<\/p>\n

It is a living musical treasure, with singular musical language and the originality and richness of its percussive thundering drums and call-and-response melodies. Come learn from Mestre Chacon and hear stories and the history of the beautiful tradition rooted in resistance!<\/p>\n Mestre Chacon<\/strong> is the son of Queen Elda Viana of Na\u00e7\u00e3o do Maracatu Porto Rico. Since his childhood, he has been present in the religious and cultural activities developed by the na\u00e7\u00e3o, building his vast Afro-Brazilian knowledge, especially in music and foundations of maracatu. He has traveled the world with Na\u00e7\u00e3o Porto Rico, and has performed and recorded with many Brazilian artists, such as Lenine, Cl\u00e1udia Leitte, and Nan\u00e1 Vasconcelos.<\/p>\n Join this event on Zoom<\/b><\/a> Co-sponsored by the UW Center for Global Studies and the UW Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies.<\/em><\/p>\n Dr. Pedro Mendon\u00e7a and MC Mano Teko will give a presentation on Funk Carioca or the funk music style developed in the comunidades of Rio de Janeiro. While Funk Carioca originated in Rio De Janeiro its popularity has spread across the country, Dr. Medon\u00e7a and MC Mano Teko will be our guides on our journey of understanding the depth and importance of Funk Carioca.<\/p>\n Dr. Pedro Mendon\u00e7a<\/b> is a professor of music education at Col\u00e9gio Pedro II, and holds a doctorate in ethnomusicology with focus on ethnography of musical practices from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He has a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Aveiro, Portugal and a degree in music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n Mc Mano Teko<\/b> is a 26-year-old MC do Funk, composer, and cultural producer.
