Almost 40 percent of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/30\/16-uw-students-awarded-fulbright-fellowships\/\"><strong>Fulbright Scholar Awards<\/strong>\u00a0at the University of Washington<\/a> this year went to Jackson School undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>The six students, listed below, will immerse them in the cultures and language and conduct research in places like Austria, India, Oman, Taiwan and Turkey for the 2019-2020 academic year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Azelle Bahadory, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to India<\/li>\n<li>Kevin Lam, senior, Dance, International Studies majors: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Taiwan<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Leibson, senior, International Studies; Korean majors: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Taiwan<\/li>\n<li>Thomas Pham, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Turkey<\/li>\n<li>Maya Sullivan, senior, Economics, International Studies majors: Fulbright Research Grant to Oman<\/li>\n<li>Binh Truong, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Research Grant to Austria. Truong also received a Southeast Asia Center Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship for summer 2019, which will take her to Vietnam National University to study intermediate Vietnamese.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_27540\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 150px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27540 size-mug-shot\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Angelia-Miranda-150x250.jpg\" alt=\"Angelia Miranda\" width=\"150\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelia Miranda, an international studies and philosophy major, heads abroad for eight months as a recipient of a Bonderman Travel Fellowship 2019-2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thanks to receiving an eight-month <a href=\"https:\/\/bonderman.uw.edu\/about\/\"><strong>Bonderman Travel Fellowship<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<b>Angelia Miranda<\/b>, an international studies &amp; philosophy with departmental honors student, and\u00a0<b>Daniel Godfrey, <\/b>a\u00a0medical anthropology &amp; global health with interdisciplinary honors; human rights, and international studies (minors) student, will each\u00a0expand their understanding of themselves and the complex, diverse and interconnected world we live in through devising and undertaking a unique travel plan.<\/p>\n<p>Miranda intends\u00a0to trace a path alongside local celebrations of cultural, religious, and historical importance, and hopes to travel to Turkey, Mongolia, China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Argentina and Chile. As a student of global health and human rights who has read extensively about the rights of different people and places, Godfrey now seeks to gain a real-world understanding of our global community. He plans to travel to Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Nepal, India, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27536\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 150px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27536 size-mug-shot\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ConorCunningham-375x375-cropped-375x375-150x250.jpg\" alt=\"ConorCunningham-375x375-cropped-375x375\" width=\"150\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conor Cunningham, international studies major and Boren Fellowship 2019-2020 recipient<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>One Jackson School undergraduate and one alternate were selected for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.borenawards.org\/\"><strong>David L. Boren Fellowship<\/strong><\/a> for the academic year 2019-2020. <strong>Conor Cunningham<\/strong>, who graduates in June, will head to Latvia.\u00a0In summer 2018, he received a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, awarded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/\">Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies<\/a>, to spend two months studying Russian in Moscow. <strong>Oliver Lang<\/strong>, an international studies major, is an alternate. Cunningham and Lang are two of the three UW students honored with a Boren award.<\/p>\n<p>Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are sponsored by the National Security Education Program, a major federal initiative designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills.
