Presenters included international expert on Arctic issues Jean-Francois Arteau; Charlie Watt and Christine Nakoolak from\u00a0Avataa Exploration and Logistics;\u00a0Makivik Corporation&#8217;s Vice President of Economic Development Andy Moorhouse;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Inuvialuit Fisheries expert\u00a0Burton Ayles; and, Minister Sean Lyall\u00a0from the \u00a0Nunatsiavut Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. The presenters were interviewed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/arctic\/research\/arctic-research-fellowships\/\">International Policy Institute Arctic Fellows<\/a>\u00a0who are UW graduate students whose research interests include the Arctic. UW Students from the Jackson School of International Studies, School of Law, School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, the College of Education and the Museology Program were represented in Fall 2016.<\/p>\n<h2>Minister Sean Lyall speaks on Parks Management and Tourism in Nunatsiavut<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uEEcz5vcmUw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nunatsiavut.com\/government\/staff-directory\/\">Minister Sean Lyall<\/a> is\u00a0Minister of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nunatsiavut.com\/department\/culture-recreation-tourism\/\"> Culture, Recreation and Tourism<\/a> at the Nunatsiavut Government. The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism was created to provide support and deliver programs and services in the areas of language, culture, youth, elders, recreation, and tourism. Language and culture are priority areas for the Nunatsiavut Government who recognize that focused, long-term planning is required to protect and enhance the unique cultural heritage of Labrador Inuit. Sean Lyall is interviewed by UW student\u00a0Elizabeth Wessells, MA, Museology and Elena Bell, PhD student\u00a0focusing on Arctic\u00a0Studies.<\/p>\n<h2>Andy Moorhouse speaks on The Makivik Corporation.<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vn43lEGb0Do?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.makivik.org\/staff\/adnymoorhouse\/\">Andy Moorhouse<\/a> serves as Vice President responsible for Economic Development at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makivik.org\/staff\/adnymoorhouse\/\">Makivik Corporation<\/a>.\u00a0Before being elected as Makivik\u2019s Corporate Secretary, Mr.\u00a0Moorhouse worked as the Corporation\u2019s Economic Development Officer as well as the Coordinator for the Ungaluk funding program, which is jointly administered by Makivik and the Kativik Regional Government to fund culturally appropriate programs geared toward crime prevention for safe and healthy communities. He is interviewed by Brandon Ray, MA student in International Studies and the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Brandon is also a fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/global\/people\/brandon-ray\/\">Center for Global Studies Foreign Language and Area Studies<\/a> (CGS FLAS).<\/p>\n<h2>Jean Fracnois Artuea speaks on Traditional Knowledge and Inuit Law<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3lOpFJcb6cE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kesserwanarteau.voog.com\/our-team\/jean-francois-arteau\">Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Arteau<\/a> is an international expert on Arctic issues. He is cofounder of<a href=\"http:\/\/kesserwanarteau.voog.com\/en\">\u00a0Kesserwan Arteau<\/a>, who provide legal and strategic consulting services, specializing in Aboriginal law, particularly in the areas of governance, natural resources, mining and energy. He is interviewed by Malina Dumas, UW JD student of Law.<\/p>\n<h2>Charlie Watt and speaks on the Impact of Global Warming and Building Mindfulness and Pride in Nunavik from their experiences of\u00a0Avataa Exploration Logistics<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9grdhDhfeSg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The founders and owners of <a href=\"http:\/\/avataa.ca\/company\">Avataa Explorations &amp; Logistics Inc<\/a>., Charlie and Christine. Avataa Explorations &amp; Logistics was founded in 2011\u00a0with a mission to create as much positive economic impacts for the Inuit who live in Nunavik by creating training, employment and economic development opportunities available. They\u00a0provide logistical and camp management services to mining, exploration and geological companies drawn to the region. They are interviewed by Ilivier Ndikumana, MA student in Applied International Studies.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Burton Ayles speaks on Fisheries Management and Climate Change.<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2JnDd3NVLxs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Burton Ayles<\/strong>, is a Canada Member, of the Canada-Inuvialuit Fisheries Joint Management Committee.\u00a0The FJMC works jointly with DFO to co-manage all fish, fish habitat, and marine mammals within the ISR.\u00a0Each year the FJMC contributes to research, assessment, and monitoring projects that address concerns raised at the community level. Examples of projects include monitoring beluga whale harvests, studies of arctic char and evaluations of the health of ringed seals. These research projects provide convincing examples of how well Traditional Knowledge and Western Science can complement each other and help to solve difficult resource management issues in the ISR.
