{"id":7641,"date":"2016-04-13T06:14:28","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T06:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.jsis.washington.edu\/global\/?page_id=7641"},"modified":"2020-04-24T15:59:41","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T15:59:41","slug":"community-college-collaborative-workshop","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/global\/community-college-collaborative-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Madison &#8211; Community College Master Teacher Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h2 class=\"page-title uw-mini-bar\">2019 Community College Master Teacher Institute<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"uw-outer-row row-1 has_text_block default-background\">\n<div class=\"uw-inner-row\">\n<div class=\"uw-column one-column\">\n<div class=\"uw-pe uw-pe-text_block\">\n<p>The University of Wisconsin-Madison\u2019s Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) and Asian Languages and Cultures, along with the University of Washington\u2019s Center for Global Studies, and Madison College\u2019s Center for International Education are pleased to announce our annual workshop for community, technical, and two-year college instructors:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>\u201cBehind the Headlines: Nation, Ethnicity, Identity, and Exclusion \u2013 The Plight of Minorities in Asia.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This interactive, two-day workshop will be moderated by Chey Davis, Associate Professor of English at Delta College in Michigan. Highlights of the event will include lectures and discussions led by experts in the field, as well as ample time for networking and brainstorming with colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed Speakers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Mustafa Aksu<\/b>, graduate student at Indiana University, will speak about China\u2019s Uyghurs.<\/li>\n<li><b>Amanda Flaim<\/b>, Asian Studies professor at James Madison University, will speak about the highland people of Northern Thailand.<\/li>\n<li><b>Cherif Correa<\/b>, English instructor at Madison College, will speak about a study he and his colleagues have been doing that considers the gap between native English speakers and speakers of English as a second or third language.\u00a0Linguistic barriers are among the problems facing ethnic minorities in this country. The ultimate goal of this study is to urge colleges to provide further assistance to students who face linguistic barriers by treating linguistic diversity the way we treat gender, race, ethnicity, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>WHEN: June 21-22<\/li>\n<li>WHERE: Madison Concourse Hotel, 1 West Dayton Street, Madison, WI<\/li>\n<li>COST: $60<\/li>\n<li>REGISTRATION DEADLINE: May 31<\/li>\n<li>FINANCIAL AID: IRIS will cover the cost of hotel rooms for participants from outside of Dane County on a first-come, first-served basis. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington, and by Madison Area Technical College\u2019s (Madison College) Center for International Education.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>About the Madison &#8211; Community College Master Teacher Institute<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iris.wisc.edu\/outreach\/ccmti\/\">The Madison &#8211; Community College Master Teacher Institute<\/a> is a two-day workshop for community, technical, and two-year college instructors, aiming to provide participants with international frameworks for examining current global issues. Through exploration of these specific challenges, participants are encouraged to link the broader international framework to their local context through proposed course content and identification of hurtles and experiences that their students may be struggling to overcome themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/iris.wisc.edu\/\">Institute for Regional and International Studies<\/a> coordinates this workshop, funded by its Title VI National Resource Center grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ope\/iegps\/index.html\">International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE)<\/a> office of the US Department of Education. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/madisoncollege.edu\/international-education\">Madison Area Technical College (Madison College) Center for International Education.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Past Workshops<\/h2>\n<h3>2017: &#8220;International Child Rights &#8211; Global Challenges and Local Implications.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>We lined up an outstanding roster of speakers, including some \u00a0who have been involved with this topic on a global level for many years! \u00a0Among other speakers were\u00a0<strong>Jean M. Geran, Ph.D.<\/strong>, <strong>Mark P. Lagon, Ph.D.<\/strong>, and <strong>Felicity Sackville Northcott, Ph.D.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/womenstudies.wisc.edu\/WSC\/annualconf\/speakers\/2016\/JeanGeran.html\">Jean M. Geran, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/strong> \u2013 Jean Geran is on the leadership circle of the 4W Initiative (Women, Wellbeing, Wisconsin and the World) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and directs 4W\u2019s pillar anti-trafficking project called Social Transformations to End Exploitation and Trafficking for Sex or STREETS. Dr. Geran has extensive foreign policy experience working on human rights, trafficking in persons, and child protection and founded a social enterprise called Each Inc. to provide capacity building and technology support to child care practitioners globally. She has been a Member of the Secretary\u2019s Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State responsible for issues including human rights, trafficking in persons, child protection, and refugee policy. She served as the Director for Democracy and Human Rights on the National Security Council, as Advisor on United Nations Reform and as an Abuse Prevention Officer on the U.S. Disaster Assistance Response Team in Iraq. She was the recipient of the 2006 Young Distinguished Alumni Award from UW-Madison.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.isst-d.org\/default.asp?contentID=197\">Mark P. Lagon, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/strong> \u2013 Mark Lagon is a thought leader and practitioner on human trafficking, human rights, global health, as well as global institutions and partnerships. He is Chief Policy Officer at Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. He is also Centennial Fellow at Georgetown University\u2019s School of Foreign Service. Previously, he was Executive Director and CEO of the leading anti-human trafficking nonprofit, Polaris Project. From 2007 to 2009, as U.S. Ambassador-at-Large, Lagon directed the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP) at the U.S. Department of State. He chaired the Senior Policy Operating Group coordinating all U.S. agencies efforts to combat human trafficking domestically and internationally. He is co-editor with Anthony Clark Arend of the 2014 book, <em>Human Dignity and the Future of Global Institutions<\/em> and is also on the advisory board of ECPAT-USA (End Child Prostitution Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) and the Center for Victims of Torture.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iss-usa.org\/about-us\/our-staff\">Felicity Sackville Northcott, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/strong> \u2013 Felicity Northcott, Director of External Partnerships and International Services, comes to International Social Service-USA after 20 years at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Northcott holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Northcott has published numerous articles on international child welfare including: <em>Pathways to Permanency: Supporting Cross-Border Family Finding<\/em><em>and Engagement for Children in Foster Care<\/em>; <em>Family Finding and Engagement Beyond the Bench: Working Across International Borders<\/em>; and <em>The Role of Social Workers in International Legal Cooperation: Working Together to Serve the Best Interest of the Child<\/em>. Dr. Northcott has expertise in a range of international child welfare treaties and issues including international adoption, international abduction, and international case management. She has trained hundreds of social workers, lawyers and judges on best practices in international family finding and engagement, how to access necessary resources for managing complex international child welfare cases and international laws and treaties that affect social work and legal practice in the United States.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2016: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Global Security &#8211; Addressing Inequality in an International Frame<\/h3>\n<p>In partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.wisc.edu\/\">Institute for Regional and International Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/global\/\">Center for Global Studies<\/a> co-sponsored this two day curriculum development workshop on international human rights, social justice, and global security.\u00a0Participants actively engaged in lively discussions and informative presentations in a collaborative workshop setting\u00a0to presenting curricula, classroom, and\/or personal experiences. The workshop offered educators a collaborative space to network with peers\u00a0interested\u00a0in incorporating new information on international studies into their teaching and mentoring. Community, technical, and two-year college instructors from all disciplines, including the sciences, with all levels of experience working these elements into their curricula &amp; professional development, could share their experiences.
