Program Description<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The World Affairs Council – Seattle and the Canadian Studies Center, Center for Global Studies, and the Herbert J. Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington are thrilled to present,\u00a0“On the Edge of the World: Stories from the Russian Arctic.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This program will highlight\u00a0the work of National Geographic fellow and photographer, Evgenia Arbugaeva, who will share her experience\u00a0growing up in the Arctic, the economic and social challenges Arctic communities currently face, and the importance of storytelling through photography to capture how Arctic culture and landscapes are changing.<\/p>\n

About the speaker<\/strong><\/h5>\n

\"\"Evgenia Arbugaeva<\/a>\u00a0was born in 1985 in the town of Tiksi, located on the shore the Laptev Sea in the Republic of Yakutia in Russia. In her personal work she often looks into her homeland – the Arctic, discovering and capturing the remote worlds and people who inhabit them. Evgenia is a National Geographic Society Storytelling Fellow, a recipient of the ICP Infinity Award, Leica Oskar Barnack Award.<\/p>\n

Her work is often located within the tradition of magical realism, and her approach combines documentary and narrative styles to create a distinctive visual iconography rooted in real experience but resonant with fable, myth and romanticism. Her work has been exhibited internationally and appeared in publications such as National Geographic, Time and The New Yorker magazines among others. She lives in London, UK.<\/p>\n

Moderator:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Nadia Jackinsky-Setchi<\/strong><\/em> is part-time lecturer in University of Washington’s School of Art + Art History + Design. Nadia is currently teaching a course in circumpolar art at the University of Washington.<\/p>\n

Sabine Lang<\/em><\/strong> is the\u00a0Professor of International and European Studies, and Director of the Center for West European Studies and the The Herbert J Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.<\/p>\n
