Brazil, 2018.<span class=\"wp-media-credit\">Frederick Bernas and Rayan Hindi.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">This lesson explores how film is used to tell the stories of young ballerinas in Brazil\u2019s favelas, resulting in art and\/or research projects examining resilience.<\/h5>\n<p>This lesson examines how film is used to explore\u00a0the stories of dancers who live in Brazil\u2019s\u00a0<strong>favelas<\/strong>, which are highly populated neighborhoods in the country\u2019s capital city of\u00a0Rio de Janeiro. The stories were captured as part of a short documentary film by Frederick Bernas and Rayan Hindi for\u00a0<em>VICE News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With an average 20 incidents of weapons fired every day in Rio, last year saw more than 100 police deaths \u2013 as well as hundreds more civilians, many of whom are caught in the crossfire of confrontations in their local areas,\u201d write Bernas and Hindi in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/reporting\/ballet-and-bullets-dancing-out-favela\">an article<\/a>\u00a0accompanying their film.<\/p>\n<p>Predict:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you think is causing violence in the favelas?<\/li>\n<li>How could violence in these neighborhood impact the\u00a0children who live there?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think the children will respond to the violence? Ustaris<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">Engage students in a dialogue about democracy with photojournalist Andrea Bruce and members of a re-entry program in Memphis, Tennessee.<\/h5>\n<p>Through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/blog\/pulitzer-center-partners-2018-catchlight-fellow-andrea-bruce\">Our Democracy<\/a>, documentary photographer Andrea Bruce aims to engage audiences in an open study of democracy while also democratizing journalism itself. She hopes to empower\u00a0individuals who represent today\u2019s biggest changes or challenges to democracy to tell their own stories.<\/p>\n<p>She invites Americans across the country to document democracy\u2019s effects in their own lives and communities and contribute to the project\u2019s Instagram feed @ourdemocracy. She also endeavors to create a multimedia map that showcases this community reportage alongside her own photography over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>Her project moves to a new location each month.
