The Ambassador will be giving a lecture entitled “Greece and the European Union:\u00a0Is the Grexit still possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alfonsas Eidintas is a historian, diplomat, and novelist. He is Lithuania\u2019s\u00a0Ambassador to Greece. Eidintas entered diplomatic service in 1993, serving as Lithuania\u2019s Ambassador to the United States. He has also served as Lithuania\u2019s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Canada, Mexico, Norway, Israel, Cyprus, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Nigeria. The Lithuanian diplomat also worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most recently as ambassador-at-large at the Foreign Ministry\u2019s Information and Public Relations Department; and was a lecturer at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science Between 1969 and 1973 Alfonsas Eidintas studied history at Vilnius Pedagogical University.<\/p>\n

A celebration of\u00a0the translation and publication of the book,\u00a0Antanas Smetona and His Lithuania<\/em>\u00a0by Alfonsas Eidintas\u00a0translated and edited by Alfred Erich Senn.<\/p>\n

Antanas Smetona (1874-1944), comparable to Latvia’s Karlis Ulmanis and\u00a0Estonia’s Konstantin Pats, was Lithuania’s authoritarian ruler on the eve of\u00a0World War II.\u00a0 Earlier, he was a leader of the national movement and in\u00a01918, a central figure in the establishment of Lithuania’s independence.\u00a0This book presents a unique view of Smetona as an individual, studying his\u00a0personal and public relations with each of twenty closest political\u00a0associates, among them his teachers, competitors and allies.<\/p>\n

The author, Alfonsas Eidintas, has written many groundbreaking publications\u00a0in Lithuanian history. In the 1990s he served as Lithuania’s Ambassador to\u00a0the USA, and is currently Ambassador to Greece.\u00a0 On May 4, Professor\u00a0Eidintas will give a brief overview of his new book, (Lithuanian language\u00a0publication 2012, translation published in late 2015), followed by questions\u00a0and discussion. We will also remember the translator and editor, historian\u00a0Alfred Erich Senn, who passed away in March this year.<\/p>\n

The book’s translation was made possible by Bernice Kellogg’s generous\u00a0bequest to the University of Washington’s Baltic Studies Program.<\/p>\n
