We are off to a great start on Tuesday, October 5, with a panel on <a href=\"https:\/\/d38rqs2egh08o4.cloudfront.net\/link_click\/r0EC2hQOr1_5Gzp1\/a18bdf9bbf35268b5fa4f3b8245c6ee2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"a18bdf9bbf35268b5fa4f3b8245c6ee2 noopener\">\u2018<strong>Germany after Merkel<\/strong>\u2019<\/a> in which we assess the transition following the German elections into a \u2018post-Merkel era\u2019 and what that means for Germany and Europe. We will do this with Prof. Joyce Mushaben (Georgetown), Prof. Christiane Lemke (UNC Chapel Hill), and Acting Assistant Prof. Sarah Lohmann (UW), and are happy to have the Goethe Pop Up Seattle and the Department of German Studies as our partners for this event. Another crucial time for Europe will be in May, when France will hold a major election and we will keep you informed about this election as well.<\/p>\n<p>Our parade of fall activities continues on <strong>October 29<\/strong>, when we will partner with Goethe Pop Up Seattle and the Elliott Bay Book Company to welcome historian Timothy Snyder and artist Nora Krug for a virtual discussion about the new graphic edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/d38rqs2egh08o4.cloudfront.net\/link_click\/r0EC2hQOr1_5Gzp1\/988d528b3a8d368994f47de6960a7a2e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"988d528b3a8d368994f47de6960a7a2e noopener\"><strong>Snyder\u2019s book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century featuring illustrations by Krug<\/strong><\/a>. Paul Constant will moderate the talk. And on November 10, we will welcome Rebecca Donner for a reading from her book <a href=\"https:\/\/d38rqs2egh08o4.cloudfront.net\/link_click\/r0EC2hQOr1_5Gzp1\/43541ee980230c830609d8146424bbae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"43541ee980230c830609d8146424bbae noopener\"><em><strong>All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days: the True Story of An American Woman at the Heart of the German Resistance to Hitler<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, again in partnership with Goethe Pop Up Seattle, the Elliott Bay Book Company, and also the Department of German Studies.<\/p>\n<p>For undergraduate students at universities up and down the West Coast and across the Western U.S., we will organize another \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/d38rqs2egh08o4.cloudfront.net\/link_click\/r0EC2hQOr1_5Gzp1\/12b57a0df35b09d19a6009c606fa80bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"12b57a0df35b09d19a6009c606fa80bd noopener\"><strong>Model EU<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 in March 2022 here at UW. At this exciting simulation co-led by CES and the EU-funded Jean Monnet Center, students representing EU Member States grapple with challenging issues in the format of a European Council summit, making deals and new friends as they negotiate and bargain.<\/p>\n<p>The European Studies Program welcomes its new majors. Phil has lived in many parts of Europe, knows the continent through his Ph.D. work, and is looking forward to working with you on European affairs. Susanna is a recent graduate of European Studies at UW, and works on coordination and details for the events and projects happening at CES.<\/p>\n<p>As transatlantic relations are strained and Europe itself is facing major challenges, I\u2019d like you to keep one thing in mind: Despite all setbacks, Europe and the EU are amazing experiments in peaceful conflict resolution as well as economic and political cooperation.
