The University of Washington’s own Anthony Geist, Professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature and Executive Director of the\u00a0Le\u00f3n\u00a0Center, has received the honor of being knighted and inducted into the Order\u00a0of Isabel la Cat\u00f3lica! The Order, created in 1815 by King Ferdinand VII, grants prestigious recognition of services that have benefited Spain.<\/p>\n
Professor Geist\u00a0received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1978, and taught at Princeton University, the University of Texas, San Antonio, and Dartmouth College before coming to the University of Washington in 1987.<\/p>\n
His publications center largely on issues of modernism and postmodernism in twentieth-century peninsular poetry and include La po\u00e9tica de la generaci\u00f3n del 27 y las revistas literarias: De la vanguardia al compromiso, Modernism and its Margins: Reinscribing Cultural Modernity from Spain and Latin America, Jorge Guill\u00e9n: The Poetry and the Poet, and the edition of the Obra po\u00e9tica de Julio V\u00e9lez.<\/p>\n
Geist’s other main field of research concerns art and literature of the Spanish Civil War. He published a photoessay on Seattle-area Lincoln Brigade veterans, coauthored with the Spanish photojournalist Jos\u00e9 Moreno: Passing the Torch: The Abraham Lincoln Brigade and its Legacy of Hope \/ Otra cara de Am\u00e9rica: Los brigadistas y su legado de esperanza. He has also curated a traveling exhibit of children’s drawings from the Spanish Civil War, which toured the country for two years.
