\"\"<\/a>Since the 1970s the global Indigenous movement, building on the human rights movement, has gained considerable momentum. In 2000, the United Nations founded the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues as the central coordinating body for matters related to Indigenous peoples; in 2007, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was ratified establishing international legal norms. Indigenous peoples are now playing a significant role in influencing international affairs via new transnational networks. The S\u00e1mi are a model for such influence.<\/p>\n

Like the Inuit, the S\u00e1mi form a multi-nation state \u2013 S\u00e1pmi \u2013 home to approximately 100,000 S\u00e1mi from the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. S\u00e1mi culture and traditions evolved over thousands of years through a close relationship to the land. The traditional S\u00e1mi economy included fishing, hunting and reindeer herding and husbandry. Beginning in the 17th<\/sup> century the new Scandinavian states began a process of colonization including assimilation efforts. Through the mid-20th<\/sup> century the S\u00e1mi began mobilizing to protect their rights, forming one of the first international Indigenous organization in the world \u2013 the S\u00e1mi Council, 1956. In 2016, the Nordic S\u00e1mi Agreement was reached to safeguard S\u00e1mi constitutional rights and to maintain S\u00e1mi language and culture. The S\u00e1mi have made significant strides to ensure their rights as a people and to provide effective models for engaging in domestic and international relations.<\/p>\n

The University of Washington is honored to host five special guests and delegates from S\u00e1pmi \u2013 Lis-Mari Hjortfors<\/strong><\/a>, Margaretha Uttjek<\/strong><\/a>, May-Britt \u00d6hman<\/strong><\/a>, and Inge Frisk<\/strong>, as well as UW\u2019s colleague from Pacific Lutheran University, Troy Storfjell<\/strong><\/a>, and UW\u2019s doctoral candidate in S\u00e1mi Studies, Karin Eriksson<\/strong><\/a>. Most of the presenters are S\u00e1mi themselves, working with aspects on reclaiming S\u00e1mi identities and the struggle for the S\u00e1mi right to survival and well-being. Scholars and activists will present their work followed by an open discussion with all participants and guests.<\/p>\n
