Registration is not required.<\/p>\n<p>Anja Wehler-Schoeck currently serves as Resident Director of the Amman Office of the German Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES). In this capacity, she is responsible for the foundation\u2019s work in Jordan and Iraq. FES Amman focuses on promoting democracy and social justice with activities covering a broad spectrum, ranging from parliamentary consultations to youth projects and a special line of work dedicated to political Islam and extremism. Ms. Wehler-Schoeck joined FES in 2005 and has held various positions at the Berlin headquarters of the organization. Before relocating to Jordan in 2012, she served as Desk Officer for the United States, Canada, and Japan. Prior to joining FES, her assignments led her to Tunisia, Jordan, and the United States. She is the author of a number of German and English publications on the Middle East and is a regular contributor to various media with her analyses on Jordan, Iraq, political Islam, and security policy. Ms. Wehler-Schoeck holds a Dual Master\u2019s Degree in Political Science from Sciences Po Paris, France, and the Free University of Berlin, Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> Jordan has so far managed to stay what many call an \u201coasis of stability\u201d in a region in turmoil. Given the heavy protection of Jordan\u2019s borders, namely with support by the U.S., it is currently unlikely that a major threat from the outside will threaten the Kingdom. The most significant challenge for Jordan\u2019s stability currently comes from within the country, referring to both violent extremism carried out by single actors or cells as well as radicalization of parts of the population on a larger scale. This talk will outline the main challenges Jordan is facing and policy recommendations to address them, including German and American policy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Middle East Center\u2019s sponsorship of this event does not imply that the Center endorses the content of the event.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Seattle Eric M.
