This is part of \u00a0a series of talks hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/wisir\/about\/\">Washington Institute for the Study of Inequailty\u00a0and Race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ayoub&#8217;s lecture will focus on the momentum of the LGBT movement in Europe, in comparison to other human rights movements. He investigates the transnational nature of European sexual identity, focusing on the diffusion of societal norms across states, while questioning why the legal recognition of LGBT minorities remains so vastly different across borders. Ayoub &#8220;documents how this process of &#8216;coming out&#8217; empowers marginalized social groups by moving them to the center of political debate and public recognition and making it possible for them to obtain rights to which they have due claim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ayoub\u2019s doctoral dissertation, upon which his book is based, received the biennial 2013-14 award for the best dissertation from the European Union Studies Association, as well as the 2014 Kenneth Sherrill Award for the best dissertation in the field of sexuality and politics, and the 2014 award for the best dissertation in the field of human rights from sections of the American Political Science Association.
