On October 25th, he met with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miis.edu\/academics\/researchcenters\/cbe-old\/about\/people\">Rachel Christopherson<\/a>, the Program Manager of the <a href=\"http:\/\/centerfortheblueeconomy.org\/\">Center for the Blue Economy<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miis.edu\/\">Middlebury Institute of International Studies<\/a> (MIIS).<\/p>\n<p>Rachel helped organize a talk for Ernesto in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miis.edu\/academics\/faculty\/jscorse\">Dr. Jason Scorse&#8217;s<\/a> class in front of a large group of graduate students. In this presentation, Ernesto focused on the issues of Common Fisheries Policy reform that had significance beyond their initial scope. By this, he intended to show the ways that the EU can be flexible, and that the Common Fisheries Policy reform was a clear example of this.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2316\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 250px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2316 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/cwes-euc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/11\/250px-Bluefin-big.jpg\" alt=\"250px-Bluefin-big\" width=\"250\" height=\"165\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Atlantic Bluefin Tuna are just one of the many species that have impacted the Common Fisheries Policy reform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Questions from the audience members and students focused on the management of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_bluefin_tuna\">Bluefin Tuna<\/a> in the Atlantic and how best to protect species that are commonly hunted across the globe. There was also\u00a0interest in how fishermen self-regulate, and if current rules were\u00a0really effective. This question showed that, beyond policy making, fisheries management itself raised considerable interest among the students.<\/p>\n<p>MIIS provided an interesting setting for Ernesto to speak. In this particular presentation, students were focused on fisheries and ecology and oceans governance, but the next day, Ernesto was scheduled to talk in an International Studies Course on current events. &#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty amazing school,&#8221; Ernesto stated. &#8220;The level of interest from students was exceptional.
