Ernesto left Boulder and headed north to Monterey, California, on October 22nd. With two different institutions to visit,\u00a0this trip would be busy but full of excitement. Ernesto took the weekend to explore the\u00a0picturesque ocean-side town, exploring nearby tourist sites and\u00a0the Monterey\u00a0Bay Aquarium<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Known as one one of the most premier aquariums in the United States, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is host to over 35,000 creatures. It is considered a global leader inocean conservation efforts, and is recognized\u00a0for its impact time and again.<\/p>\n

After his tour of the aquarium, Ernesto visited the Naval Post Graduate School<\/a>. He was met by Commander Paula Travis<\/a>, who led a conversation about military and international policy in the EU compared to the United States.\u00a0The heart of the discussion, titled “The New EU Initiative on Global Ocean’s Governance”, was interactive and the graduate student attendees were highly attentive.<\/p>\n

Discussion points that came up during the intense debate included how to enhance the role of developing nations in attempts to improve global governance and what key factors motivate active involvement. In regards to oceanic policy, students addressed ways to fight illegal fishing and which countries are open for multilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n

After this discussion, Ernesto presented briefly on Brexit. This discussion, hosted by\u00a0Dr. Peter Chu<\/a>, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Oceanography, was met with lively discussion as well.<\/p>\n

Overall, both talks at the Naval Post Graduate School were met with passionate students who deeply care about global oceans governance and the future of conservancy. “I’m incredibly impressed by NPS’s organization and kindness, and their students knowledge and interest was unparalleled,” Ernesto stated in response to the students and staff. He hopes to return to continue these discussions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
