As program chair, my mission is to make sure that the UW will always be a place where students \u2014 both those of Greek heritage and those with no previous experience of or connection with Greece \u2014 can gain a deeper knowledge of Greece and all aspects of its rich and ancient culture and its language in all periods, from ancient to modern. I want to continue to improve and expand our program to meet this mission. The most recent student to graduate with a minor, Classics major <a href=\"https:\/\/hasc.washington.edu\/student\/featured-profile\/student-profile-meagan-white\">Meagan White<\/a>, is now in her second year at the University of Washington School of Law. White recently completed an internship with the Northwest Justice Project&#8217;s King County Veterans Unit, providing legal assistance to low-income veterans as a law clerk. She continues to work with veterans at the UW Law Veterans Clinic and is part of a team helping to write a casebook supplement for a new textbook on property law.<\/p>\n<h3>Hellenic Studies named third best program in the United States<\/h3>\n<p>In December 2024, The National Herald named the University of Washington Hellenic Studies program as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalherald.com\/top-american-universities-offering-hellenic-studies\/#:~:text=University%20of%20Washington,College%20of%20Greece.\">the third best program in the United States<\/a>, behind Hellenic College Holy Cross and Princeton University. The paper, a weekly journal of the Greek-American community, praised the UW&#8217;s program for its &#8220;holistic understanding of Greece, with classes spanning the ancient and modern world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a id=\"section3\"><\/a>Student Highlights<\/h2>\n<h3>2024-25 Hellenic Studies scholars announced<\/h3>\n<p>This year, four University of Washington students received over $10,000 in scholarships from the Hellenic Studies program in recognition of their academic work and interest in Greek culture:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Soulandros Scholarship: <\/strong>Noor Alkaledy (B.A. in Education, Communities, and Organization)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Kaltsounis Scholarship: <\/strong>Carly Torres (B.A. in Anthropology)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Eleftherios and Mary Rouvelas Endowed Writing Prize in Hellenic Studies: <\/strong>Luke Giuntoli (M.A. in Classics)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Irene Kravas Scholarship in Hellenic Studies<\/strong>, which offers financial assistance to undergraduates interested in Hellenic culture, was also awarded during this scholarship cycle.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a id=\"section4\"><\/a>Study Abroad<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5114 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/euwesteurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/05\/Temple-Athens-Greece-Acropolis-History-Historical-1289075-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Acropolis in Athens, Greece\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/euwesteurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/05\/Temple-Athens-Greece-Acropolis-History-Historical-1289075-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/euwesteurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/05\/Temple-Athens-Greece-Acropolis-History-Historical-1289075-375x564.jpg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/euwesteurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/05\/Temple-Athens-Greece-Acropolis-History-Historical-1289075.jpg 479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Learn. Experience Greece: Hellenic Studies Summer Program<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/euwesteurope\/programs\/hellenic-studies\/study-in-greece\/\">The Hellenic Studies Summer Program<\/a>, directed by Jackson School faculty <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/people\/nektaria-klapaki\/\">Nektaria Klapaki<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/people\/taso-lagos\/\">Taso Lagos<\/a>, continues to be a popular choice for University of Washington students seeking immersive cultural and academic experiences abroad. From June 17 to Aug. 16, 20 students split their time between Deree College in Athens and Harvard University\u2019s Center for Hellenic Studies in the historic town of Nafplio in the Peloponnese.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a id=\"section5\"><\/a>Event Update<\/h2>\n<h3>Connecting cultures: A year in Hellenic Studies<\/h3>\n<p>This year, the UW Hellenic Studies Program hosted international scholars, supported student research, and deepened regional partnerships. The work explores curses used in chariot races, business rivalries, and legal disputes, blending Greek, Egyptian, Near Eastern, and Jewish traditions.
