The Center for European Studies and the Jean Monnet EU Center are housed under the Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies<\/a> (CEREAS) in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington, which features one of the largest collections of area studies centers in the United States.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Center for European Studies (CES)\u00a0<\/strong>was founded in 1994 with the mission of enhancing the quality of teaching and research on European politics, society, and culture through outreach to universities, community colleges, business, the general public, and the K-12 community. The Center\u2019s programs are uniquely interdisciplinary, fostering collaboration between Europeanists from twenty different departments and professional schools on campus.<\/p>\n

Generously funded by a prestigious grant from the European Commission\u2019s Erasmus+ Programme, the CES-affiliated EU Center<\/strong> is a\u00a0Jean Monnet Center of Excellence<\/strong>. Established in\u00a01998 with a grant from the European Union Delegation to the United States, the EU Center is well-known for its activities that promote\u00a0meaningful teaching, outreach, and research programs in the study of European Union institutions and policies, and transatlantic\u00a0relations. The UW EU Center is also the frequent host of a Jean Monnet Chair. Most recently, former CES and EU Center Director Sabine Lang held the Jean Monnet Chair<\/strong> in Civil Society, Inclusion, and Diversity in the European Union (CIDEU).\u00a0Previously, the Jean Monnet Chair was held by the EU Center former CES and EU Center Director James Caporaso.<\/p>\n

Both the Center for European Studies and the Jean Monnet EU Center are members of the European Consortium for Political Research<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and the Council for European Studies<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
