This year\u2019s crisis simulation \u2013 the first in-person exercise since 2019 \u2013 was a dramatic return to the diplomatic role-playing of the past. With ceremonial gift-giving, espionage, and fake strategy documents left out as decoys, the two-day event held May 14-15 brought together 54 graduate and undergraduate students who worked diligently to resolve the tensions on the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Designed as a capstone experience for graduate students in the mid-career Master of Arts in Applied International Studies (MAAIS) program, the annual crisis simulation course is open to other graduate and undergraduate students; since 2019, cadets in the Air Force ROTC have also joined the weekend simulation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1996 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/maais\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-300x276.jpg\" alt=\"Four student negotiators seated around a table\" width=\"300\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-300x276.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-1024x940.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-768x705.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-1536x1411.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-2048x1881.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-375x344.jpg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-750x689.jpg 750w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/emis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/07\/Team-1140x1047.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Colonel Tony Verenna, the exercise director, gave the UW participants high marks. \u201cThis was my third time working with the team from the Jackson School and the Master of Arts in Applied International Studies program and I cannot say enough about the professionalism of the faculty, students and mentors. In this tremendous experiential learning environment, the UW students not only excelled in the exercise but also managed to have a good time. Hopefully, they will be able to leverage this memorable experience in their desired work, no matter where their careers take them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students\u2019 diplomatic efforts drew the attention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/12\/simulation-offers-uw-students-practical-experience-in-crisis-negotiation\/?utm_source=UW_News_Subscribers&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=UW_Today_secondary&amp;mkt_tok=NTI3LUFIUi0yNjUAAAGEdgRd7voCm_YJbO8PUv4L58Rp3hulohGBnp6oC3liIqY6INuiopUs7zaVhUA7lqhtYxD9jSYyw5kzB1n16GToZ9F0oeMaP9SYeXOrHHRc\">UW News<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyuw.com\/special_sections\/grad_edition_2022\/surprises-guises-and-gifts-international-strategic-crisis-negotiation-exercise-caps-off-a-year-in-the\/article_b0273e26-e504-11ec-a51e-fb2edc7ec4f7.html\">UW Daily<\/a>, both of which covered the exercise. The UW News story features Professor Robert Pekkanen,\u00a0who teaches the crisis simulation course that prepares students for the weekend simulation.
