The experience has been incredible thus far. I have been favorably impressed by the quality of instruction at the Center for Slovene Studies and by Slovenia in general. I am studying and living in Ljubljana, but I have also had the opportunity to travel and see quite a few other amazing places around Slovenia.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I spent a day trekking the Slovenian coastline; from Izola through Piran, to the famous salt flats at Se\u010dovlje near the Croatian border.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: View from the ancient city walls Piran, Slovenia,\u00a0 Right: Salt flats at Se\u010dovlje (Se\u010doveljske soline)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/advise\/\/image\/Cyrus%20Rodgers,%20Slovenian%20coastline.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>I attended a concert of traditional choral music behind the walls of a 12th century church, where Slovenian Istria meets the Karst in Hrastovlje.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just below the Kra\u0161ki rob (Karst border) at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Hrastovlje, Slovenia:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/advise\/\/image\/Cyrus%20Rodgers,%20Slovenian%20church.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>I have been fortunate to see a small part of what this country has to offer in terms of natural beauty and its vistas have amazed me, but my most exciting experiences in Slovenia have been opportunities to meet leading cultural figures. Dr. Michael Biggins, Head Slavic Librarian at The University of Washington and my professor of Slovene Language, put me in contact with Slovene author Drago Jan\u010dar and documentary filmmaker Andrej Doblehar. Drago Jan\u010dar is a widely respected contemporary European novelist, playwright, and essayist. His work is one of the focuses of my research; he is also one of my favorite authors. I had a chance to meet and sit down with Mr. Jan\u010dar for an hour to discuss his writing.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Dr. Andrej Doblehar produces a documentary series for RTV Slovenia called Kulturni Vrhovi (Cultural Hights http:\/\/4d.rtvslo.si\/arhiv\/kulturni%20vrhovi). Each episode of Kulturni Vrhovi focuses on a different church from one of the country\u2019s regions that represents an important center of pilgrimage for Slovenians. Dr. Doblehar is also the on-screen personality that guides the viewer to each pilgrimage site and informs them about the site\u2019s history and cultural significance.
