Why do we deny atrocities in the face of overwhelming evidence? A small group of psychologists say they are moving toward answers<\/a>, from &#8220;The Science of Hatred,&#8221; Tom Bartlett&#8217;s fascinating article about Sabina\u00a0\u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On January 22nd, the Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies hosted Bosnian visiting scholar Sabina \u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy, of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssst.edu.ba\/\"><em>Sarajevo School of Science and Technology<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy is a Bosnian psychologist working on inter-group reconciliation and her\u00a0research seeks to understand\u00a0how people come to terms with a\u00a0past marked by collective and gross human rights violations. She is particularly interested in identifying socio-psychological processes and conditions which can be used to\u00a0facilitate sustainable inter-group reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Her highly anticipated talk was well attended and students had many questions about her work. \u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy mentioned that originally her research was focused on the perspective of the perpetrator group\u00a0and that during this process she began to recognize a need for\u00a0socio-psychological processes which could\u00a0facilitate an increase in acknowledging in-group responsibility as an important pillar of sustainable inter-group reconciliation. As a result, her\u00a0current research has shifted to the victim group perspective. She is currently examining victim group responses to different reactions by the perpetrator group such as denial, acknowledgment, emotions of guilt and shame, reparation and\/or apology offers etc, in an effort to collect quantifiable evidence which would help create lasting reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2344.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3191\" src=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2344-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2344\" width=\"669\" height=\"502\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No stranger to the conflict she studies, \u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy\u00a0escaped Bosnia in 1992 during the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Sarajevo\">Siege of Sarajevo<\/a>\u00a0as a 12 year old, fleeing\u00a0to Croatia and then Germany with her mother and younger brother. Returning in 1995 to enroll in the University of Sarajevo, an introductory class in psychology set her on her course. She feels that Bosnia and Herzegovina have faced\u00a0many challenges while trying\u00a0to deal with the burden and legacy of the past. The biggest of which she considers to be how to\u00a0re-build inter-group trust, something she is incredibly passionate about, and which she believes would in turn lead to more cooperative and common-goal oriented behavior. Inter-group trust for\u00a0\u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy is important in any multi-ethnic state and imperative in post-conflict contexts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2345.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3192\" src=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2345-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2345\" width=\"669\" height=\"502\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of her research\u00a0\u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy teamed up with filmmaker Namik Kabil to create six short films each with the same actor expressing different reactions to the same event\u00a0which she then used in order to\u00a0research the effects of different emotional responses to in-group atrocities on reconciliation processes.&#8221; Over time the films became the foundation of a longer movie, Unutra. \u00a0\u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy is currently a visting Fullbright scholar at Stanford University.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2348.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3194\" src=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2348-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2348\" width=\"669\" height=\"669\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A great overview of her work is available <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-Science-of-Hatred\/143157\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0from the Chronicle of Higher Education, and a list of academic articles by Sabina \u010cehaji\u0107-Clancy is available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=0t_a13sAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">here<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>In this video you can watch her\u00a0lead a breakout session at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanityinaction.org\/programs\/50-2012-international-conference\" target=\"_blank\">Third Annual Humanity in Action International Conference<\/a> in Sarajevo.
