Uzbekistan follows a now well-established custom since its independence in 1991. Every year on December 8, the Day of the Constitution, the guiding theme for the coming year is announced. For example, 2014 was the year of the \u201cHealthy Child\u201d, \u00a02004 the \u201cYear of Love and Compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Uzbekistan government has declared 2015 to\u00a0be “The Year of Attention and Care for Elder People.”<\/p>\n

Such declarations are not empty words. On the contrary, the government spends a considerable amount\u00a0 on accomplishing \u00a0the set goals of a given year.<\/p>\n

The plans for 2015 will highlight the traditional respect Uzbeks pay to their elders, generally referred to as\u00a0 nuroniy keksalarimiz \u201c<\/em>our elders with faces\u00a0 shining with light\u201d.\u00a0 Indeed, growing\u00a0old means to grow\u00a0wise.<\/p>\n

A few lines of a hymn-like poem \u201cTo the Old\u201d (Keksalarga<\/em>), composed by the poet Erkin Vohid(ov), will give us an understanding of the status of the elders among Uzbeks:<\/p>\n

Uyimizning to\u2019rida bo\u2019ling,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do take the seat of honor in our homes,<\/p>\n

Tashlab ketmang bizni beomon.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t leave us without your concern.\u201d<\/p>\n
