Vucinich Book Prize<\/a>, for her monograph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plutopia.net\/\">Plutopia: Nuclear Families, Atomic Cities, and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters<\/a>.\u00a0The work draws upon official records and personal interviews to tell the story of Richland, Washington and Ozersk, Russia, the first two cities in the world to produce plutonium<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2813 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/plutopiabookcove.jpeg\" alt=\"plutopiabookcove\" width=\"213\" height=\"293\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>Both cities were insular state secrets where families of scientists and workers lived in\u00a0\u201chighly-subsidized, limited-access atomic cities.\u201d A definitive account of both cities, <em>Plutopia<\/em> explores the environmental tragedies and personal costs of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>While <em>Plutopia<\/em> was awarded by ASEEES in 2014, Dr. Brown offered <a href=\"http:\/\/newbooksinhistory.com\/2013\/09\/11\/kate-brown-plutopia-nuclear-families-atomic-cities-and-the-great-soviet-and-american-plutonium-disasters-oxford-up-2013\/\">an interview<\/a> in 2013 for New Books in History, a website devoted to the discussion of the most contemporary historical research.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2902 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/ellisoncenter.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/kate_brown_0.jpg\" alt=\"kate_brown_0\" width=\"121\" height=\"151\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/history.umbc.edu\/facultystaff\/full-time\/kate-brown\/\">Kate Brown<\/a>\u00a0is currently a professor of history at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UW History PhD alumna Kate Brown has been repeatedly honored throughout 2014, and most recently at the ASEEES conference with the Wayne S.
