During a symposium at the University of Washington, Dr. William Craft Brumfield discussed\u00a0“Architecture at the End of the Earth,” an exhibition of his photographs from the Russian north. The exhibit is currently on display<\/a>\u00a0in the UW Odegaard Library through May 16, 2017.<\/p>\n

At the event, Dr. Brumfield also introduced the \"\"William Brumfield Russian Architecture Digital Collection<\/strong><\/a>, an online resource available through the UW Library featuring over 29,000 images of Russian sites, mostly buildings constructed from the Middle Ages and the present.<\/p>\n

Brumfield’s exhibit and the symposium at the University of Washington were\u00a0recently featured<\/a> in the Russian cultural magazine Russia Beyond the Headlines<\/em>. The article noted Brumfield’s contribution to the field and highlighted\u00a0the discussion by UW faculty about the role of Russian architecture and art in the cultural landscape of the Russian North.<\/p>\n

In his lecture, Dr. Brumfield spoke about his travels throughout rural parts of northern Russia while he conducted research and photographed historic churches and landmarks. He also touched on how the influence of\u00a0European Baroque architecture could be found even in these remote parts of Russia.<\/p>\n

Following Dr. Brumfield, University of Washington professors Christopher Campbell<\/a>, Elena Campbell<\/a>, Ivan Drpi\u0107<\/a>, and Ellen Hurst spoke about Russian architecture and heritage.<\/p>\n

The event also featured music by the choir of\u00a0St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral<\/a>, Seattle, under the direction of Gregory Kotar.<\/p>\n

A professor of Russian literature at Tulane University in New Orleans, William Brumfield<\/a> is the author of over forty books and hundreds of articles on Russian architectural history and is widely recognized as North America\u2019s foremost expert on the subject.<\/p>\n
