{"id":11740,"date":"2017-05-11T00:07:35","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T00:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/?p=11740"},"modified":"2017-05-11T00:07:35","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T00:07:35","slug":"max-bergholz-violence-generative-force-identity-nationalism-memory-balkan-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/news\/max-bergholz-violence-generative-force-identity-nationalism-memory-balkan-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Max Bergholz | Violence as a Generative Force: Identity, Nationalism &amp; Memory in a Balkan Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a lecture at the University of Washington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordia.ca\/artsci\/history\/faculty.html?fpid=max-bergholz\">Max Bergholz<\/a>,\u00a0Associate Professor of History at Concordia University in Montreal, spoke about the sudden and perplexing descent into extreme violence of a once peaceful multiethnic community just inside modern\u00a0Bosnia which was once fully incorporated into the World War II Independent State of Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>Bergholz drew on\u00a0research from his new book, <em>Violence as a<\/em>\u00a0<em>Generative Force: Identity, Nationalism, and Memory in a Balkan Community.\u00a0<\/em>Through extensive fieldwork, the book discusses the mechanism that drove the peaceful community to commit acts of brutality.<\/p>\n<p>During two terrifying days and nights in September 1941, the lives of nearly 2,000 men, women, and children were taken savagely by their neighbors in Kulen Vakuf, a small rural community straddling today&#8217;s border between northwest Bosnia and Croatia. How does such violence between neighbors affect their identities and relations?<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Max Bergholz is Associate Professor of History at Concordia University in Montreal.
