Scholars, students, and educators from the Pacific Northwest gathered at Reed College in Portland, Oregon to present their research on a <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECAS-NW-Program-2017-3.pdf\">wide variety of topics<\/a>, including contemporary politics, security, art, literature, and approaches to teaching Russian language and teaching about Russia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11576 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-194x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-194x300.jpeg 194w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-768x1187.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-663x1024.jpeg 663w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-375x580.jpeg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-750x1159.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/REECASNW2017_11x17-1140x1762.jpeg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the days events, presenters discussed Jewishness in Soviet literature and history. The panel, chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reed.edu\/russian\/professors.html\">Evgenii Bershtein<\/a>, Professor and Chair of the Russian Department at Reed College, looked at various Jewish aspects of written works during the communist period.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/russian-flagship\/dr-cassio-de-oliveira\">Cassio de Oliveira<\/a>, Assistant Professor at Portland State University, spoke about Isaak Babel\u2019s \u201cOdessa Tales\u201d and rhetoric of the revolution. Other presenters discussed the messages in Soviet Yiddish verse and views of the holocaust.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chaired by UW Ellison Center Managing Director Philip Lyon, one of the morning panels focused on socialist legacies and current challenges in Eastern\u00a0Europe. <a href=\"https:\/\/soc.washington.edu\/people\/sara-tomczuk\">Sara Tomczuk<\/a>,\u00a0PhD\u00a0Candidate in Sociology at UW, discussed how policies in Slovakia and the Czech Republic shape attitudes toward Roma minority communities. Kevin Aslett, PhD Student in Political Science at UW, presented his research on how newer members of the European Union approach the euro currency. Focusing on several socialist and communist political parties of Moldova, Rodica Rusu, Visiting Fulbright Scholar, explained how the communist legacy shapes politics and elections in the country today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following the morning panels, UW History Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/history\/people\/55\">Glennys Young<\/a> delivered the keynote lecture of the conference, entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/ellisoncenteruw\/glennys-young-the-russian-revolution-and-the-making-of-the-20th-century-1252017\">The Russian Revolution and the Making of the 20th Century: Global Perspectives at the Centennial.<\/a>\u201d Professor Young discussed the impact of the revolution on the events of the 20th century and spoke about how refugees of the upheaval left their mark on societies across the world, including here in the Pacific Northwest. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11579\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11579\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-530x353.jpg 530w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-800x534.jpg 800w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-375x250.jpg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/04\/DSC_0330-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellison Center MA student Teofila Cruz-Uribe discusses the avant-garde.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The afternoon panels addressed a wide variety of issues, including security and leadership power structures in the Soviet Union, civic activism in modern-day Ukraine, and how Buddhist, Jewish, and Mongol identities are expressed in art, film, and history. <a href=\"https:\/\/slavic.washington.edu\/people\/jose-alaniz\">Jose Alaniz<\/a>, Associate Professor at UW, spoke about Czech comics, while <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/people\/teofila-cruz-uribe\/\">Teofila Cruz-Uribe<\/a>, UW Jackson School\u00a0MA student, discussed the avant-garde in Russian Museology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/russian-flagship\/dr-william-comer\">William Comer<\/a>, Associate Professor and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/russian-flagship\/flagship-program\">Russian Flagship Program<\/a> at Portland State University, chaired a panel on teaching the Russian language. The presenters discussed approaches to teaching the language at\u00a0different levels and to different groups. Anna Aslufieva, Assistant Professor at Portland State University, spoke about engaging students in intercultural learning through service projects.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the final panel of the day, presenters discussed how Russia under Vladimir Putin is shaping the country\u2019s role in the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/people\/celia-baker\/\">Celia Baker<\/a>, Ellison Center MA Student, discussed how the issue of human rights are viewed by the Russian Federation and what that means for global relations. <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/people\/carol-j-williams\/\">Carol Williams<\/a>, former LA Times Moscow Bureau Chief, spoke about contemporary conflict between the United States and Russia. <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/ellisoncenter\/people\/chris-collison-2\/\">Chris Collison<\/a>, UW Jackson School\u00a0MA Student, spoke about Russia\u2019s information warfare and conspiracy theories surrounding<br \/>\nUkraine\u2019s 2014\u00a0revolution and the ensuing War in the Donbas.
