The states that emerged from the former Yugoslavia have established new hierarchies of official and regional or minority languages. The new languages, largely considered to be mutually intelligible, co-exist within the borders of the new states, and this reality has posed significant challenges to language planners.<\/p>\n<p>Robert David Greenberg is Dean of Arts and Professor of Linguistics at The University of Auckland.
