Those paying attention may noti<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ce that a great deal of the most fearless daredevils have Slavic accents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Defying gravity and hanging from great heights to snap an extreme selfie has grown into\u00a0a major fad among young people from the former Soviet Union, where hundreds are believed to take part in the underground culture of urban climbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/99dKnsWwsK0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Known as roofing or skywalking, extreme climbers first began to gain popularity a few years ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/trinixy.ru\/66493-zimniy-rufing-v-krasnoyarske-50-foto.html\">posting<\/a> videos and wide-angle images from atop scaffolding, statues, and buildings in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, where the large number of abandoned sites and lax security provide an opportunity for dramatic angles and extreme photo shoots. Since then, the climbers have moved to higher-profile summits, including skyscrapers in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BOH3BMtlX5b\/?taken-by=a_remnev&amp;hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hong Kong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/picturegalleries\/howaboutthat\/10844043\/In-pictures-Vertigo-inducing-selfies-taken-by-daredevil-skywalkers-in-Dubai.html?frame=2916864\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dubai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <a href=\"http:\/\/sploid.gizmodo.com\/watching-this-dude-sit-and-spin-on-the-edge-of-a-buildi-1789714590\">Toronto<\/a>, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/05\/13\/man-busted-for-climbing-skyscraper-is-well-known-daredevil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VK_sgbeWlRw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moscow\u2019s Stalinist <a href=\"http:\/\/students.sras.org\/moscows-seven-sisters\/\">Seven Sisters<\/a>\u00a0buildings have become especially popular destinations for Russia\u2019s extreme climbers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2014, things turned political when a Ukrainian who goes by the nickname Mustang Wanted doused the Soviet Star at the top of the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building in blue and yellow\u2014the national colors of Ukraine. Russian police diligently arrested several locals, prompting Mustang Wanted to admit responsibility and demand that the authorities release the wrongly accused. Several daredevils <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/petapixel.com\/2015\/10\/04\/russian-teen-falls-to-death-while-shooting-daredevil-rooftopping-portraits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have fallen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to their deaths while trying to get an unforgettable photo. Last year, Russia <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/russia\/11725299\/Russia-launches-safe-selfie-campaign-after-series-of-deaths.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">launched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a campaign called \u201cSafe Selfies\u201d to discourage people from risking their lives for a photo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/11881900\/More-people-have-died-by-taking-selfies-this-year-than-by-shark-attacks.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Independent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, more people died while taking selfies in 2015 than in shark attacks. The number of selfie-related deaths is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/38012990\/the-rise-in-selfie-deaths-and-how-to-stop-them\">rising steadily<\/a>.
