This summer the Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies<\/a>, the Center for West European Studies<\/a>, and the Center for Global Studies<\/a> partnered for an educator workshop<\/a>. The one-day event was designed to consider current electoral trends in Europe and Russia. More than 20 middle school, high school, and community college educators from around Washington learned about current electoral, economic, and multicultural issues facing Europe and Russia and equipped themselves with the tools necessary to teach these complicated and controversial subjects in their classrooms.<\/em><\/p>\n

Many of the day’s talks were recorded for podcasting after the workshop.<\/em><\/p>\n

Neo-Nationalist Parties in Eastern and Western Europe<\/h3>\n

Steve Pfaff<\/a>, Professor of Sociology at the University of Washington, studies comparative sociology, collective action, and religion and focuses on Central and Eastern European societies. He set the stage for the populism discussion by focusing on the history of neo-nationalist parties in Europe. He tracked the popularity of such parties and their recent rise to prominence in places like Austria, Hungary, and Denmark.<\/p>\n
