The\u00a0<strong>interdisciplinary conference<\/strong> is organized by the University of Washington\u2019s Ellison Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies. Sometimes abbreviated as \u201cREECAS NW\u201d, the conference was <strong>recognized as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aseees.org\/about\/affiliate\/regional\/northwest\">official ASEEES northwest regional conference<\/a>\u00a0by the ASEEES Board of Directors in 2017<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The conference hosts many panels on a variety of topics from a wide diversity of disciplines including\u00a0<strong>political science, history, literature, linguistics, anthropology, culture, migration studies, gender studies, LGBTQ studies, film studies\u00a0<\/strong>and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Papers on Russia and all the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia are welcome, including the Uyghur region in China (Xinxiang and elsewhere).<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"Call-for-Proposals\">Call for Proposals<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The REECAS Northwest Conference welcomes both individual paper proposals and also panel\/roundtable proposals. Individual proposal submissions will be grouped into panels with a common theme.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Panel Proposals:<\/strong> Panel chairs should gather their individual panelist information (name, email, affiliation, presentation title) and submit that on behalf of all panelists using the <strong>Call for Proposals Form<\/strong>. The speaker considers these challenges and proposes responses, drawing on an assessment of the state of Russian studies in 2022 he conducted for ASEEES, other recent studies and discussions of these topics, and three decades of experience as a researcher in the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>About the speaker:\u00a0<\/strong>Theodore P. Her translation of Yaroslav Hrytsak&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Ukraine: the Forging of a Nation<\/em>\u00a0came out earlier this year,\u00a0and the novel\u00a0<em>The Face of Fire<\/em>\u00a0by Aleksei Nikitin is forthcoming from the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Film | <em>Golod<\/em> <em>(Famine)<\/em> &#8211; A new (and swiftly banned) documentary film on famine in Russia in the 1920s<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Historian and documentary contributor <strong>Douglas Smith<\/strong> presents <strong><em>Golod<\/em><\/strong> (Famine) a new documentary film from the U.S.-government-funded media outlet Current Time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2022\/11\/15\/russia-bans-provocative-soviet-famine-documentary-a79375\">Immediately banned by Vladimir Putin&#8217;s government<\/a>, the film will be screened at REECAS Northwest, followed by a discussion. Dr. Smith was asked to be part of the <em>Golod<\/em> film project as the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/reviews\/capsule-review\/2019-10-15\/russian-job-forgotten-story-how-america-saved-soviet-union-ruin\"><em>The Russian Job<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> which tells the forgotten story of American aid to the USSR during the famine there during the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas Smith<\/strong>\u00a0is an award-winning historian and translator. He is the author of six books on Russia and has a doctorate in history from UCLA. Douglas\u2019s new translation of Konstantin Paustovsky\u2019s epic memoir,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/435792\/the-story-of-a-life-by-paustovsky-konstantin\/9781784873080\"><em>The Story of a Life<\/em><\/a>, published by Vintage Classics in the UK in 2022 and by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/the-story-of-a-life?variant=42443023810728\">New York Review Books<\/a>\u00a0in the US in 2023, has received widespread critical praise.
