About the Conference<\/h2>\n

The conference this year will\u00a0feature a special Pacific NW plenary panel session on Trump and Putin after the 2018 Russian Presidential Election. The panel is titled \u201cThe End of the\u00a0Bromance? A Serious Discussion on US-Russia Relations in Times of Tension\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>and will be composed of prominent scholars representing four major universities in three different countries.<\/p>\n

\"\"Scott Radnitz\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0is an Associate Professor in the Jackson School of International Studies and Director of the Ellison Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies at the University of Washington. He has conducted research in Central Asia and the Caucasus since 2002. He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 2007, and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Belfer Center at Harvard and at the Kennan Institute. He does research on post-Soviet politics, covering topics such as protests, authoritarianism, identity, and state building. His book,\u00a0Weapons of the Wealthy: Predatory Regimes and Elite-Led Protests in Central Asia<\/i>, was published by Cornell University Press in 2010. His publications are included inComparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of Democracy, Post-Soviet Affairs, National Interest, Foreign Policy<\/em>, and\u00a0Slate<\/em>. He is a member of the Program on New Approaches to Research and Security (PONARS) in Eurasia, a participant in the Bridging the Gap Project at American University, and an advisory board member of the Central Asian Studies Institute at the American University of Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n

Yoonhee Kang\u00a0<\/strong>is a Professor of Eurasian Studies at Kookmin University in Korea. She received\u00a0Ph.D. at University of Glasgow in UK. She is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters, including\u00a0Korean Peninsular and Four Great Powers, 1972 and 2014<\/em>, \u201cRussian Human Rights Movement under Putin: Framing Processes and Political Opportunities,\u201d \u201cRoles of Civil Society in Transition of Democracy in Russia.\u201d Her research interests have focused on the issues of civil society, foreign policy and international relation history of Russia and Eurasian states.<\/p>\n

\"\"Benjamin Tromly<\/strong>\u00a0is Associate Professor of History at University of Puget Sound, where he teaches modern Russian and European history. His first book,\u00a0Making the Soviet Intelligentsia: Universities and Intellectual Life under Stalin and Khrushchev<\/em>\u00a0was published in 2014. He is currently completing a manuscript on Russian emigres and the Cold War, tentatively entitled Revolutionaries, Spies and Imposters: Russian Emigres and American Power on the Front Lines of the Cold War.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr. Nicole J Jackson<\/strong>\u00a0is an international relations and security studies scholar specializing in Russian and the former Soviet Union. She is Associate Professor at the School for International Studies, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. She has published on Russian foreign and security policy, regional security governance and\u00a0 illicit trafficking and terrorism in Central Asia. Her book\u00a0Russia and the CIS; Theories, Debates and Policie<\/em>s (Routledge, 2003) examines Russia\u2019s military involvement in Georgia, Tajikistan and Moldova in the 1990s. She is currently working on two projects: The first examines Russia\u2019s role in security governance in the \u201cglobal commons\u201d, and the second is a critical analysis of Canadian and NATO policy towards Russia, with a special focus on hybrid warfare.<\/span><\/p>\n

REECAS NW 2018 will take place in the\u00a0Simpson Center for the Humanities<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0University of Washington<\/a>. The Simpson Center is located in the\u00a0Communications Building<\/a>\u00a0on the UW Seattle Campus.<\/p>\n
