This course provides an overview of political, social, and cultural history of one of Europe’s most splendid cities, St. Petersburg. We will focus on the changing world of St. Petersburg from its founding in 1703 to the present, and also use it as a window to explore major themes in Imperial Russian and Soviet history. St. Petersburg’s history will serve as the terrain to think about how historians work. We will analyze texts about and images of St. Petersburg in order to understand how history is recorded and written.
