{"id":5198,"date":"2023-10-31T19:44:56","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T19:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/?p=5198"},"modified":"2024-03-13T20:51:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T20:51:46","slug":"early-contacts-between-east-southeast-asia-and-the-united-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/early-contacts-between-east-southeast-asia-and-the-united-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Early Contacts Between East\/Southeast Asia and the United States"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Compared with ancient Asian states like China and Japan, the United States was the new kid on the block.\u00a0 But as soon as the U.S. came into existence, its officials and entrepreneurs set their sights on engaging with East Asian civilizations.\u00a0 This <strong>online 5-week seminar<\/strong> began with America\u2019s first interactions with China and Japan, and the consequences of those contacts.\u00a0 From there, we spent the bulk of our course discovering how Filipinos fared under American colonial rule from 1898 to 1932.\u00a0 This oft-forgotten Philippine-US history is so fascinating that it is a shame that it is unfamiliar to our students. There were also two live online events:<\/p>\n<p>February 12, 2024, 6:00-7:00 pm MT (5:00-6:00 pm PT)<\/p>\n<p>February 26, 2024, 6:00-7:00 pm MT (5:00-6:00 pm PT)<\/p>\n<h3>Program Leader<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/people\/shelton-woods\/\">Dr. Shelton Woods<\/a> lead this program.
