In 1912, the Meiji emperor passed from the scene, and Japan faced an uncertain future with a much weaker emperor at the helm. In China, 1912 saw the end of two-thousand years of imperial rule.\u00a0 China was at a crossroads.\u00a0 During the next three decades both countries took on new challenges as well as shifts in ideologies and eventually war with each other. This course traced the <strong>evolution of modern Japan and China<\/strong> during these crucial years.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers joined <strong>Dr. Shelton Woods<\/strong>\u00a0from Boise State University for an\u00a0<strong>online seminar<\/strong> to explore this uniquely interesting and consequential period of history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Here are the <strong>titles of the lectures<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Japan in 1912<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Taisho Japan to 1923<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Japan in the 1920s, Part One<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Japan in the 1920s, Part Two<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Emperor Hirohito and Manchuria<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Creation of Manchukuo<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Japan to 1937<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Themes in China\u2019s Imperial Period<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The End of Qing China<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Warlord Era: A Case Study of Zhu De<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>China\u2019s New Cultural Movement, Part One<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>China\u2019s New Cultural Movement, Part Two<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Mao and the Long March<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Japan and China at War<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>A Course Overview of Japan and China<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Details<\/h3>\n<p>Participants were expected to watch three online lectures each week at their convenience beginning <b>January 23 <\/b>through<b> February 27, 2023.<\/b> There were also two live online events:<\/p>\n<p>February 13, 2023, 6:00-7:00 pm MT (5:00-6:00 pm PT)<\/p>\n<p>February 27, 2023, 6:00-7:00 pm MT (5:00-6:00 pm PT)<\/p>\n<h3>Program Leader<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/people\/shelton-woods\/\">Dr. Shelton Woods<\/a> will lead this program. Dr. Woods is a Professor of East\/Southeast Asian History at Boise State University.<\/p>\n<h3>Programs Benefits<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Numerous books and classroom materials.<\/li>\n<li>Access to 15 online lectures.<\/li>\n<li>$100 check for additional classroom resources.<\/li>\n<li>20 free WA OSPI clock hours.<\/li>\n<li>Two continued professional education credits from Boise State University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The seminar was offered to K-12 educators free of charge thanks to a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nctasia.org\/\">National Consortium for Teaching about Asia\u00a0(NCTA)<\/a>, and it was sponsored by the University of Washington\u2019s East Asia Resource Center in partnership with Boise State University.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The years between 1912 and 1939 were momentous for Japan and China.
