About the \u201cWhere We Are At\u201d Series<\/h3>\n

With a 24-hour uninterrupted, busy news cycle, it can be difficult to stay updated on East Asia and to grasp the relevance of the news we see. This\u00a0online program series<\/strong>\u00a0helps teachers with a recap of how China, Xinjiang, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan stand on the domestic and international stage, provides a summary and the specific context of what happened in each East Asian country in the last few months, and allows for a place for teachers to ask questions to a regional expert. Whether you closely follow East Asia or want to learn more about why you should be paying attention to it, this program is a great occasion to deepen your knowledge and understanding.<\/p>\n

Teachers join the EARC staff and\u00a0guest speakers<\/strong>\u00a0from the faculty of the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington and other regional experts for a discussion on the contextual relevance of recent and current events.<\/p>\n

This program is sponsored by the East Asia Resource Center at the University of Washington,\u00a0and funded by a Freeman Foundation grant in support of the\u00a0National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA)<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

These are stand-alone programs, and teachers can sign up for as many as they would like. The fourth\u00a0event<\/strong>\u00a0of this series focused on\u00a0North and South Korea\u00a0<\/strong>and was led by\u00a0Professor\u00a0Albert Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n

North and South Korea: Where We Are At Session<\/h3>\n

Date: Tuesday, November 9, 2021.<\/p>\n

Time: 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Pacific Time.<\/p>\n

Regional Expert<\/h3>\n

Professor Albert Park<\/a>\u00a0is the Bank of America Associate Professor of Pacific Basin Studies at Claremont McKenna College. As a historian of modern Korea and East Asia, his current research project focuses on the roots of environmentalism in modern Korean history and its relationship to locality and local autonomy. This book project is tentatively titled\u00a0Imagining Nature and the Creation of Environmental Movements in Modern Korea<\/em>. He is the author of\u00a0Building a Heaven on Earth: Religion, Activism and Protest in Japanese Occupied Korea<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and is the co-editor of\u00a0Encountering Modernity: Christianity and East Asia<\/em><\/a>. Dr. Park is the Co-Principal Investigator of\u00a0EnviroLab Asia<\/a>\u2014a Henry Luce Foundation-funded initiative at the Claremont Colleges ($1.5\u00a0million award) that carries out research on environmental issues in Asia through a cross disciplinary lens. Alongside being an Associate Editor at the Journal of Asian Studies, he is the Co-Editor of the book series\u00a0Environments of East Asia<\/a>—<\/em>a multidisciplinary book series on environmental issues in East Asia that is published by Cornell University Press.\u00a0He is the recipient of four Fulbright Fellowships for Research, an Abe Fellowship\u00a0from the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and fellowships from the Korea Foundation and the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago. A native of Chicago, he received his B.A. with honors from Northwestern University, an M.A. from Columbia University and Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n
