{"id":4068,"date":"2021-09-08T00:03:11","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T00:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/?p=4068"},"modified":"2021-10-07T16:45:33","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T16:45:33","slug":"the-zainichi-korean-identity-our-school-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/the-zainichi-korean-identity-our-school-documentary\/","title":{"rendered":"Locating Korean-ness in Postcolonial Japan: Zainichi Korean Identity in the documentary film &#8220;Our School&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p>This workshop examined the <strong>Korean minority in Japan<\/strong> (commonly known as <em>Zainichi<\/em>) through a close reading and discussion of the revelatory documentary film <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Our_School_(film)\"><i class=\"\">Our School<\/i> (<i class=\"\">Uri hakkyo<\/i>)<\/a><\/strong> from 2007. The film follows the lives of students and teachers at one of the North Korean affiliated \u201cethnic schools\u201d (<i class=\"\">minzoku gakko<\/i>) established in Japan for the <i class=\"\">Zainichi<\/i> Korean community that remain active today. Through a discussion of <i class=\"\">Our School<\/i> this workshop considered the ways in which <i class=\"\">Zainichi<\/i> Korean identity has evolved since the end of colonization and the conclusion of the Cold War. How do members of the young generation conceive of their Korean identity and their relationship to Japanese society compared to previous generations? What does it say about the nature of the Korean diaspora and the position of <i class=\"\">Zainichi<\/i> and other minority groups in contemporary Japan? What similarities or differences can be seen in the approach to cultural education with that of schools in the US?<\/p>\n<p>Participants were sent a link to freely stream the movie, and were required to watch it before the start of the program. No prior knowledge of the subject was necessary to attend the program.<\/p>\n<p>This program was sponsored by the East Asia Resource Center (EARC) in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington with funding from a Freeman Foundation grant in support of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nctasia.org\/\">National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Date and Time<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, October 5, 2021, 4:30 &#8211; 6:30 PM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This program was held over Zoom. Participants received a link to join the program the day prior to the event.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Program Leader<\/h3>\n<div>Nate Heneghan is an independent scholar who has taught Japanese literature and culture at Oberlin College, Wesleyan University, and other institutions. His work focuses on literary and cinematic representation of the Korean minority in Japan (<i class=\"\">Zainichi<\/i>) from post-War to present. He is currently at work on a manuscript devoted to this subject, tentatively titled, \u201cUnder Erasure: Tracing <i class=\"\">Zainichi<\/i> Korean Identity in Postcolonial Literature and Visual Media.\u201d<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Program Benefits<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Free access to the documentary <em>Our School<\/em>.
