{"id":3404,"date":"2020-04-15T17:59:48","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T17:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/?p=3404"},"modified":"2020-05-26T20:30:54","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T20:30:54","slug":"japans-smallpox-epidemic-of-735-the-aftermath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/japans-smallpox-epidemic-of-735-the-aftermath\/","title":{"rendered":"The Aftermath of Japan&#8217;s Smallpox Epidemic &#8211; Online Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Throughout the course of history, disease outbreaks have been a frequent disruptor across civilizations.\u00a0In this online program, we examined the aftermath of the smallpox epidemic of 735\u2013737 that afflicted much of\u00a0Japan and had\u00a0significant social, economic, and religious repercussions throughout the country. Along with a brief overview of the Nara period, we looked at some examples of art, architecture and poetry to understand how the epidemic left a lasting impact on Japan&#8217;s culture and society.<\/p>\n<p>This program was led by former East Asia Resource Center Director Yurika Kurakata,\u00a0who presented from abroad.\u00a0 During her time at the EARC, she organized and contributed to numerous Japan related programs.<\/p>\n<p>This seminar was offered at no cost to current, in-service teachers, and was sponsored by the East Asia Resource Center (EARC) in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington with funding from a Freeman Foundation grant in support of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nctasia.org\/\">National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Details<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>May 21, 2020;\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>5:00 PM to 6:00 PM PST (Group 1);\u00a0May 22, 2020;\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>5:00 PM to 6:00 PM PST (Group 2).<\/p>\n<p>This online program was held on Zoom.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Online resources<\/li>\n<li>1\u00a0free Washington State OSPI clock hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Presenter<\/h4>\n<p>Yurika Kurakata was the Assistant Director and later Director of the East Asia Resource Center from 2014 to 2018, when she moved to Singapore for her spouse&#8217;s job.\u00a0 Prior to working at the EARC, she was the Associate Director at the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia University where she managed public\u00a0and student programs on Japanese culture.\u00a0 She also worked with the late Professor Keene, the renowned Japanese literary scholar for whom the center is named after.\u00a0 \u00a0She started her career in education as a Japanese history and Social Studies teacher at a bilingual school outside of New York City.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Throughout the course of history, disease outbreaks have been a frequent disruptor across civilizations.\u00a0In this online program, we examined the aftermath of the smallpox epidemic of 735\u2013737 that afflicted much of\u00a0Japan and had\u00a0significant social, economic, and religious repercussions throughout the country.
