“The Chinese Exclusion Act” was the second event of\u00a0Study Sessions<\/em>, a new NCTA series led by\u00a0Mary Roberts<\/a>. <\/em>These three-hour sessions take various forms to provide supportive, non-lecture collaborative group learning formats to study Asian and Asian American topics. Each study session gives educators multiple ways to evaluate teaching resources to extend their learning.<\/p>\n

On April 22, 2020, educators\u00a0 and experts joined in an after-school conversation about the Chinese American Exclusion Act. Educators examined books which took into account the voices and experiences of Chinese Americans themselves.<\/p>\n

Tracy Lai <\/strong>(Historian, Seattle Central College) helped to further participants’ understanding of this critical topic.\u00a0Melanie King<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Art Historian, South Seattle College) also contributed as a guest to this study session. NCTA Seminar Leader\u00a0Mary Roberts<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0facilitated this afternoon conversation.<\/p>\n

This program was offered online.<\/p>\n

This seminar was offered at no cost to current, in-service teachers, and was sponsored by the East Asia Resource Center (EARC) in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington with funding from a Freeman Foundation grant in support of the\u00a0National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n
