Discover how authors do research for their books and how book titles and cover illustrations are selected. Gain confidence in making close readings and exploring character motivations with your students. Find out how to authenticate the reliability of the material and learn about new databases on children\u2019s literature.<\/p>\n<p>Using three separate books on East Asia, including Freeman Award winners, teachers examined three different genres with frameworks to support students\u2019 critical thinking and inquiry. These books included, but were not limited to, <em>Where&#8217;s Halmoni?<\/em>, <em>Are You an Echo?<\/em> and <em>The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball<\/em>. For educators of grades 2 to 8.<span class=\"m_6375465280874546910apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This seminar was sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/\">East Asia Resource Center<\/a>\u00a0(EARC), University of Washington, in conjunction with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA).<\/p>\n<h3>Details<\/h3>\n<p><strong>July 23-27, 2018<\/strong><br \/>\n8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. (Monday-Thursday)<br \/>\n8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. (Friday)<br \/>\nUniversity of Washington, Seattle<\/p>\n<h3>Leader<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/people\/mary-roberts\/\">Mary Roberts<\/a> with guest segments led by authors, librarians and EARC master teacher, Oralee Kramer.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>B<\/strong>enefits<\/h3>\n<p>Aside from the registration and housing fees, this seminar was offered free of charge thanks to the Freeman Foundation NCTA grant to the East Asia Resource Center.
