{"id":527,"date":"2015-10-10T18:25:31","date_gmt":"2015-10-10T18:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/?p=527"},"modified":"2016-06-14T21:16:15","modified_gmt":"2016-06-14T21:16:15","slug":"researching-kissinger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/2015\/10\/10\/researching-kissinger\/","title":{"rendered":"Researching Kissinger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Oct. 9, world-renowned historian Niall Ferguson, author of 14 books and named as one of 100 of the world\u2019s most influential people by\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u00a0magazine, spoke to a packed room at University of Washington\u2019s Kane Hall about his\u00a0newest book\u00a0<em>Kissinger: Volume I: The Idealist, 1923-1968,\u00a0<\/em>in an event hosted by the Jackson School of International Studies, UW Bookstore and The Whole U.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight was Ferguson talking about his experience as the first scholar to have access to Henry Kissinger\u2019s personal archives and papers. Reading from excerpts of Kissinger\u2019s letters to his parents, Ferguson talked about how exile, war and the Holocaust shaped Kissinger\u2019s thinking and career.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson School Professor David Bachman also joined Ferguson onstage in a Q&amp;A style conversation about Kissinger, including questions on former President Nixon\u2019s\u00a0choice of Kissinger as national security adviser.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the evening event, Ferguson spent an hour meeting with the Jackson School director, faculty and master\u2019s and Ph.D. students, discussing research and history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Niall Ferguson is the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard and a senior research fellow of the Hoover Institution, Stanford. He is the author of the <em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em> bestsellers<em>The Great Degeneration, Civilization, The Ascent of Money,<\/em> and <em>War of the World<\/em>. He also writes regularly for newspapers and magazines all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>David Bachman is a\u00a0professor of international studies at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.\u00a0He was chair of the China Studies Program from 1992-2003 and associate director of the Jackson School from 2000-2001 and 2003-2010.
