{"id":1038,"date":"2016-07-25T16:05:27","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T16:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2016-09-30T16:08:42","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T16:08:42","slug":"traveling-new-old-streets-beijing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/2016\/07\/25\/traveling-new-old-streets-beijing\/","title":{"rendered":"Traveling the New (and Old) Streets of Beijing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nicholas Steele, a UW undergraduate in International Studies, was awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/advise\/funding\/flas\/\">Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship<\/a> to study Chinese with the <a href=\"http:\/\/cetacademicprograms.com\/programs\/summer\/chinese-beijing\/\">CET Program<\/a> in Beijing this summer.\u00a0 He is spending the summer &#8220;exploring the old and new city, building friendships, and only speaking Mandarin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10454 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Nicholas-Steele-restaurant-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"In a restaurant in China\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>He writes, &#8220;I have gotten to know Beijing through the eyes of cab drivers. I&#8217;ve been learning, from the men who live and work in the city, that the texture of life here is unbound from the past. The idea of change, the familiarity of transformation, is intuitive for these cab drivers: men who once drove through empty roads now shepherd American students on crowded highways. They navigate through a metropolis built, and rebuilt, every few years; where dirt roads that lead to remnants of another era bisect six-lane avenues. Conversations with Beijing cab drivers have given poignancy to my stay this summer. It is not only because each conversation is the result of an expanding vocabulary, from weeks spent studying Mandarin at a local university.
