The East Asia Center at the University of Washington promotes teaching and learning about China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan across disciplines, across campus and in the community. Founded in 1964, it is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designated as a Title VI National Resource Center*. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Center partners with the East Asia Resource Center<\/a>, the University of Washington\u2019s center for the teaching of East Asia studies in K-12 schools, and works in cooperation with the China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan Programs in the Jackson School, as well as with other units on campus concerned with East Asian teaching and research. In particular, these include the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, and the Tateuchi East Asia Library.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n

The East Asia Center\u2019s mission is to advance knowledge of China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan through undergraduate and graduate programs, faculty research, and outreach programs for the larger community. It builds capacity for teaching about East Asia at the University, provides FLAS fellowships for students of East Asian languages, invests in faculty research and professional development, engages community members in East Asia-related programs, provides training and support to professionals, and provides support for the building of East Asia-related resources and publications at the University. The Center coordinates many East Asia-related activities on- and off-campus, and serves as a nexus linking faculty and resources from across the University. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Center collaborates with other Jackson School outreach centers, local community organizations and civic institutions, and partner institutions from across the country, and serves as a regional clearinghouse for information related to East Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) office administers Title VI (domestic) and Fulbright-Hays (overseas) grant and fellowship programs that strengthen foreign language instruction, area\/international studies teaching and research, professional development for educators, and curriculum development at the K-12, graduate, and postsecondary levels.
