{"id":197,"date":"2016-02-19T06:03:09","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T06:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/?page_id=197"},"modified":"2025-06-16T23:08:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T23:08:14","slug":"graduate","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/programs\/graduate\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Graduate training on East Asia is offered by the Jackson School of International Studies, the Department of Asian Languages and Literature, the School of Law, and many other departments.<\/p>\n<h2>The Jackson School<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jackson School<\/a> offers <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/graduate\/mais\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master of Arts in International Studies<\/a> (MAIS) degree programs in <a title=\"M.A. \u2013 China Studies\" href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/programs\/graduate\/ma-china-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China Studies<\/a>, <a title=\"M.A. \u2013 Japan Studies\" href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/programs\/graduate\/ma-japan-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan Studies<\/a>, and <a title=\"M.A. \u2013 Korea Studies\" href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/programs\/graduate\/ma-korea-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Korea Studies<\/a>. Students may also pursue a minor focus on any of these regions or on East Asia in general through the <a title=\"International Studies General\" href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/programs\/undergraduate\/international-studies-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Studies<\/a> (General) program. Most students in this general program are also pursuing concurrent degrees in professional schools such as Public Affairs, Law, and Business.<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">PLEASE NOTE: The Jackson School&#8217;s China, Japan and Korea MAIS degree programs are being reviewed to be updated into a new degree program: M.A., East Asia Studies. The degree will combine China, Japan, and Korea Studies programs. This new M.A. degree is in the final approval stage and should be granted in the new year. We are optimistic that with final approval the inaugural cohort will begin in AUTUMN 2025. (<u>Applications are due\u00a0Jan 31, 2025<\/u>).<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Students interested in the M.A. of East Asia Studies should apply to the (current) Japan, China, or Korea Studies M.A. programs for the 2025-26 academic year. This new degree will have tracks where students will focus on China, Japan, Korea, or Taiwan and Studies while also studying about other parts of East Asia.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>If you are interested in\u00a0<i>Taiwan Studies<\/i>, please apply to either China, Korea, or Japan Studies M.A. programs but note in your application that you are interested in the Taiwan Track.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To pursue a <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/graduate\/mais\/concurrent-degrees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concurrent degree<\/a>, you must apply and be accepted into both programs. It is highly recommended to discuss academic planning with an adviser. Concurrent degree paths are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/evans.uw.edu\/prospective-students\/apply\/concurrent-degrees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MPA<\/a> through the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/foster.uw.edu\/academics\/degree-programs\/full-time-mba\/curriculum\/certificates-concurrent-degrees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MBA<\/a> through the Foster School of Business<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.washington.edu\/students\/academics\/concurrent.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JD<\/a> through the School of Law<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/smea.uw.edu\/program\/mma-curriculum\/certificates-concurrent-degrees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMA<\/a> through the School of Marine and and Environmental Affairs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sefs.washington.edu\/academicPrograms\/graduate\/applicant.shtml#MAIS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MFR\/MS<\/a> through the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sph.washington.edu\/prospective\/SPHcatalog.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MPH<\/a> through the School of Public Health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Asian Languages and Literature<\/h2>\n<p>For students that wish to deepen their knowledge in the language and literature of East Asia, the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/asianll\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Asian Languages and Literature<\/a> offers majors and minors in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/chinese-program-description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese language and literature<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/japanese-program-description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese literature and linguistics<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/fields\/korean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Korean language and literature<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The School of Law<\/h2>\n<p>The Asian Law Program at the School of Law, focusing on the countries of East Asia, is one of the largest in the country and is widely recognized as the premier center of learning in this field. In addition to an LL.M. and Ph.D. in Asian Law, the program offers an Asian Law concentration track within the regular J.D. degree. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.washington.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Law<\/a> offers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.washington.edu\/AsianLaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asian Law LLM\/PhD Programs<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.washington.edu\/AsianLaw\/LLM\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LLM in Asian and Comparative Law<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.washington.edu\/AsianLaw\/PhD\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PhD in Asian and Comparative Law<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.washington.edu\/Students\/Academics\/Concentration\/Asian.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asian Law within the JD Program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Affiliated Departments<\/h2>\n<p>History, Political Science, Anthropology, and Art History have the largest numbers of graduate students with a focus on East Asia. However, it is possible to do a dissertation on East Asia in many other departments as well, ranging from Linguistics and Economics to Women Studies.
