{"id":179,"date":"2016-02-19T04:56:04","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T04:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/?page_id=179"},"modified":"2025-06-16T23:27:56","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T23:27:56","slug":"undergraduate","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/programs\/undergraduate\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Undergraduate training on East Asia is offered by the Jackson School of International Studies, the Department of Asian Languages and Literature, Foster School of Business, and many other departments.<\/p>\n<h2>The Jackson School<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jackson School of International Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (JSIS), students can major in Asian Studies with an East Asian country concentration (China, Japan, or Korea) or in the International Studies (General) Program with an East Asia concentration. Those majoring outside JSIS can choose one of three East Asia minors (China Studies, Japan Studies or Korea Studies).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Jackson School of International Studies offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/undergraduate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">majors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">minors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Asian Studies with the following East Asia options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/undergraduate\/asia-studies\/china-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">China<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/undergraduate\/asia-studies\/japan-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japan<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/undergraduate\/asia-studies\/korea-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Korea<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and with East Asia tracks in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/programs\/undergraduate\/international-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">General International Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Asian Languages and Literature<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who wish to focus on the study of East Asian language and\/or literature can do so through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/undergraduate-programs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Asian Languages and Literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Majors and minors exist for the following languages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/chinese-program-description\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chinese<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/japanese-program-description\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japanese<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/korean-program-description\">Korean<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Foster School of Business<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Undergraduates enrolled in the UW Foster School of Business also have an opportunity to gain expertise on East Asia. The UW Business School has the largest degree program in the country in international business. Students enrolled in the <a href=\"http:\/\/foster.uw.edu\/academics\/certificates-and-minors\/certificate-of-international-studies-in-business\/cisb-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Certificate of International Studies in Business<\/a> program may choose to minor in Chinese or Japanese language and area studies. Admission into CISB is contingent upon your admission into Foster.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Affiliated Departments<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No formal East Asia tracks or programs are available outside of JSIS and the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. Undergraduates with a strong interest in East Asia and committed to a discipline such as political science, art history, economics or history can declare a major in those departments and take East Asia-related courses at the same time.
