The Center for West European Studies (CWES), founded in 1994, is one of eleven federally funded National Resource Centers for European or West European Studies in the United States. Our mission is to enhance the quality of teaching and research on West European politics, society, and culture through outreach to universities, community colleges, business, the general public, and the K-12 community. The Center’s programs are uniquely interdisciplinary, fostering collaboration between Europeanists from twenty different departments and professional schools on campus. The Center for West European Studies is housed in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, which features one of the largest collections of area studies centers in the United States.
The Center for West European Studies is awarded the Title VI grant for the seventh consecutive grant round
On September 26, 2014, the Center for West European Studies, along with seven other Title VI centers located within the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington, were notified that they had been awarded multi-year federal grants from the United States Department of Education for the period 2014-2018 to promote global engagement and scholarship. This is the seventh consecutive grant round for which the Center for West European Studies has received federal funding for activities geared towards students, faculty, the K-14 community, business sector, community organizations, and the general public. The renewed grant will support activities such as the teaching and study of foreign countries and languages, teacher training, lectures, conferences and partnership activities to support local entrepreneurs, trade officials, and cultural events in the greater Seattle area.
