Jackson School of International Studies and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.washington.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the University of Washington will spearhead a new initiative of innovative collaborations to explore the effects and consequences of authoritarianism in Southeast Asia and on Southeast Asian American communities in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The $1 million grant to deepen discourse on Southeast Asia was approved in June by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hluce.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Henry Luce Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after a national competition seeking projects that will develop expertise, capacity and resources on Southeast Asia. At the UW, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hluce.org\/programs\/asia\/grant-categories\/luce-initiative-southeast-asia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Luce Initiative on Southeast Asia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will attract underrepresented students, faculty, future librarians and the regional Southeast Asian American community to the project of engaging with Southeast Asian history, language and culture in new ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are excited to develop our work to engage scholars and students in the crosscurrents and interconnections between the U.S. and Southeast Asia,\u201d said Celia Lowe, c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hair of the Jackson School\u2019s Southeast Asia Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThis grant will help build a vibrant and relevant future for Southeast Asian studies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multiple UW departments will be involved in the four-year project, which will be administered by the Southeast Asia Center. UW Libraries and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burkemuseum.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Burke Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will form innovative collaborative projects on healing and reconciliation from histories of violence and dislocation, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UW Asian Languages &amp; Literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Department will create a new faculty position to connect language study to meaningful community engagement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The grant includes introducing Southeast Asian Studies graduate students to archival practices. An undergraduate research class will study applicable museum artifacts, with a focus on making collections meaningful\u00a0and accessible to communities of Southeast Asian heritage, and in Southeast Asia. The grant also will train a Southeast Asia librarian through a two-year program\u00a0supported by a\u00a0partial\u00a0tuition fellowship from the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ischool.uw.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UW iSchool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A number of UW faculty are involved in the initiative. Chair of the Southeast Asia Center <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/people\/celia-lowe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Celia Lowe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the principal investigator while head of the Southeast Asia Section of UW Libraries, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/seac\/people\/judith-henchy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Judith Henchy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, also affiliate faculty at the Jackson School, is co-investigator on the grant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis grant will support work to heighten awareness of archival collections for graduate students in disciplines which would not normally look to those resources, for instance in film studies, or creative writing,\u201d said Henchy, who will lead a fellowships program under the grant. \u201cAt the same time, we will encourage graduate students to consider professions in librarianship or archival studies, training them in a way that will have enormous future impact on the field of Southeast Asian librarianship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.washington.edu\/people\/jenna-grant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jenna Grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor in anthropology, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/history.washington.edu\/people\/vicente-l-rafael\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vicente L. Rafael<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, professor of history, will lead a collaboration with filmmakers, archivists and documentation specialists from partner institutions in Cambodia, the Philippines and Burma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other partners in the project include a Southeast Asia Research Family course at the Burke Museum with UW Southeast Asia Center\u2019s Senior Lecturer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/faculty-and-staff\/raissa-desmet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raissa DeSmet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asian.washington.edu\/people\/desiana-pauli-sandjaja\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauli Sandjaja<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, teaching professor and coordinator of the Southeast Asia program at UW\u2019s Asian Languages &amp; Literature, will lead work to hire a new faculty member who studies new media, digital humanities, translation, popular culture, film or literature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aes.washington.edu\/people\/linh-thuy-nguyen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Linh Th\u1ee7y Nguy\u1ec5n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor with UW\u2019s American Ethnic Studies Department, will bring together faculty from UW, University California, Irvine, University of California, Los Angeles and University of California, Riverside to collaborate in exploring the intersections of Southeast Asian and ethnic studies to inform new curriculum, research and other pedagogies where historically there has been little interdisciplinary coordination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This release first appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/05\/uw-secures-competitive-1-million-luce-foundation-grant-to-advance-southeast-asian-research-and-community-engagement\/\">UW News<\/a> on Oct. 5<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Southeast Asia Center at the Henry M.
