Tr\u1ea7n Ho\u00e0ng Long\u00a0is a first-year graduate student pursuing an MA in Cinema and Media Studies at UW.\u00a0 His research interests involve Vietnamese history, history of the war in Vi\u1ec7t Nam, and Vietnamese cinema.\u00a0 We are delighted that Long has agreed to serve as our film and restaurant reviewer this week.\u00a0 The restaurant he\u2019s selected, Ph\u1edf B\u1eafc S\u00fap<\/em> Shop, is in the Little Saigon area of the International District.\u00a0 A list of additional restaurants in the area open for take-out and delivery<\/a> was compiled by Friends of Little Saigon. <\/em><\/p>\n

Tr\u1ea7n Anh H\u00f9ng\u2019s The Scent of Green Papaya <\/em><\/a>(M\u00f9i \u0111u \u0111\u1ee7 xanh)<\/em> (1993) presents a poignant, elegant, powerful, dramatic narrative film that centers upon the coming-of-age of a servant girl, M\u00f9i<\/em> (\u201csmell\u201d in Vietnamese), who is hired to work for a troubled, wealthy family. \u00a0The film was the debut feature for Tr\u1ea7n, the Vietnamese-born, French-raised auteur<\/em>, and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film along with an award at Cannes. Set in 1951 H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City (formerly S\u00e0i G\u00f2n), the film paints a slice-of-life profile of M\u00f9i. Audiences are allowed a window into her journey of discovering the beauty of the world around her as she is caught between the chaotic nature of family life that plays simultaneously with themes of womanhood, motherhood, infidelity, romance, and love. However, amongst all of these complex themes, the simplicity of M\u00f9i\u2019s fascination with nature, food, and a particular male-specimen is articulated best through the deliciously beautiful shots of food, especially \u0111u \u0111\u1ee7 xanh <\/em>(\u201cgreen papaya\u201d), which is another lens through which one is able to be immersed into Vietnamese culture.<\/p>\n

Keeping with the topic of food, Ph\u1edf B\u1eafc S\u00fap Shop<\/a> on Jackson in Little S\u00e0i G\u00f2n, International District, hands down, has the best ph\u1edf<\/em> (\u201cbeef noodle soup\u201d) in Seattle (besides my mom\u2019s). I\u2019ve gone here for dates, hangouts with friends, family dinners, and even my own birthday: it\u2019s that<\/em> good. Vi\u1ec7t Nam-born and Vietnamese-American alike have praised this restaurant for the high-quality, authentic offerings, which are served in their famous metal bowls. Ph\u1edf s\u01b0\u1eddn b\u00f2<\/em> (\u201cshort-rib\u201d) is literally my favorite thing in the world, but you cannot go wrong with the yummy, Vietnamese-flared appetizers, including but not limited to chicken wings and french fries. I highly recommend trying this place out if you want the best of Vietnamese beef broth. They are currently doing take-out orders and are open from 10 A.M. to 9 P.M.\u00a0 Check out the menu offerings and order online<\/a> for pick-up. They also offer vegetarian dishes, desserts, and beverages like c\u00e0 ph\u00ea s\u1eefa \u0111\u00e1<\/em> (\u201cVietnamese iced milk dripped coffee\u201d).\u00a0 You will not be disappointed.<\/p>\n

Although we live in troublesome times, I hope we can find beauty and peace as M\u00f9i did through her maturation into a young woman. She faced many hardships, but set a positive example through her interactions. Like M\u00f9i, we should remember that food brings people together. In such divisive times, although we must maintain social distance, sharing a meal with one another, whether that be through Zoom, Facetime or six feet away at the dinner table, is a way to escape from all the noise for a while. The Scent of Green Papaya <\/em>is a beautiful film that emphasizes the importance of family and gestures to the importance of togetherness\u2014solidarity, as M\u00f9i did not have the privilege of living with hers. The film is openly available on Kanopy<\/a>,\u00a0which is free through most educational institutions and libraries.\u00a0 You can also watch it on Alexander Street through UW Libraries.\u00a0 Moreover, consider buying a takeout container of ph\u1edf to enjoy while watching this film to show your support during troubling times.<\/p>\n

With that, I\u2019d like to leave you with a Vietnamese idiom to remember,<\/p>\n
