{"id":3881,"date":"2020-03-27T15:58:35","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T15:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/seac\/?p=3881"},"modified":"2020-03-27T15:58:35","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T15:58:35","slug":"life-during-wartime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/news\/life-during-wartime\/","title":{"rendered":"Life During Wartime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Shannon Bush<\/p>\n<p>With online classes throughout spring quarter, social distancing, and the cancellation of events, conferences, concerts, festivals\u2014gatherings, in short\u2014life during COVID-19 ain\u2019t no party. \u00a0Although taxing, these restrictions are understandable as they are effective weapons in our limited arsenal to reduce the spread of this virus.\u00a0 While we find ourselves accepting limits on freedom of movement and association that would have seemed intolerable three weeks ago, what we should not accept is the spike in xenophobia accompanying the spike in cases.\u00a0 Whether from the overt racism modeled by some at the national level or the implicit bias too easily denied or disregarded by a larger share of the population, the dangers posed by the novel coronavirus are not limited to its direct physiological effects.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3885\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 316px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3885\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/seac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-375x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-375x281.jpg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-1140x855.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1086-108x81.jpg 108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Restaurants had to cut down their business hours and only cater to go orders<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Restaurants across Seattle have been hit hard by the prohibition against dining on the premises.\u00a0 However, the steep decline in business has been felt more keenly in the International District than in many other neighborhoods.\u00a0 The motivation isn\u2019t always overt discrimination.\u00a0 In the early stages of the state\u2019s implementation of increasingly restrictive health guidelines\u2014before the stay-at-home order this week\u2014self-identifying progressive Seattleites explained they were only avoiding the ID because it was so crowded they didn\u2019t feel comfortable going.\u00a0 Belltown or the Pike-Pine corridor might not trigger the same worry.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the stay-at-home order, the ID was eerily quiet last Saturday.\u00a0 I had planned to walk through the main core, unobtrusively making notes about which restaurants were still doing take- out and delivery business to generate a list for readers\u2019 reference.\u00a0 At the first store I came to that was still open for business, Seattle Best Tea, I ran into owner Lydia Lin as she hurried out to make a delivery.\u00a0 She stopped to tell me about the neighboring establishments that were still open (not many on her block between 5<sup>th<\/sup> and 6<sup>th<\/sup> on S. King Street), expressed concern that I wasn\u2019t protecting myself with PPE, and invited me in for a boba tea.\u00a0 When I went back to see her and her associate, Chris, at the end of my walk, she refused to let me pay for the perfectly sweetened Jasmine milk tea she prepared, then insisted I take some plastic gloves from her supply in case I needed to shake anyone\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3886\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 375px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-half wp-image-3886\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/seac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1151-e1585283722523-375x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1151-e1585283722523-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1151-e1585283722523-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/IMG_1151-e1585283722523.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Certain establishments were not so lucky, they had to close their business until the situation improves<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Owners of the small businesses, including tea shops, bakeries, and restaurants, in the International District are all deserving of a virtual handshake or high-five from us.\u00a0 Many have been in business for decades and are facing the prospect of closure for the first time.\u00a0 Please continue to support them with your carry-out business during the crisis.
