always a popular reception, this years attendance went over the top – we literally topped out the room for meeting fire code, with about 175 attendees.<\/p>\nThe University of Washington was flooded with activity in late March and early April, as scholars of Asia from all over the world converged on Seattle for the 75th Annual AAS Conference. The conference typically draws over 3,000 attendees. This year, 400 panels covered the breadth and depth of knowledge and research about all different parts of Asia. Competition to put on Panels is quite fierce; this year, two panels proposed by Southeast Asia Center faculty were accepted – those proposed by Professor Laurie Sears (History and SEAC Director) and Senior Lecturer Pauli Sandjaja (Indonesian Language).<\/p>\n
Along with the South Asia, REECAS, East Asia and Global Studies Centers, the Southeast Asia Center hosted an opening night reception. While always a popular reception, this years attendance went over the top – we literally topped out the room for meeting fire code, with about 175 attendees.<\/p>\n
The SEAC also funded membership in AAS for our graduate students and paid their conference fees. This allowed all of our grad students to attend; due to straightened financial circumstances for students, this is not always possible.
